The rollout of fiber connections to the internet is creating a new digital divide between “haves” and “have-nots.” Fiber is something like 10 times faster — and can easily be 100 times faster — than plain vanilla broadband. But the only major carrier swapping out the copper is Verizon, whose FIOS service is or will be in only 17 states.
