123-reg web/domain forwarding
Good news! It seems that web/domain forwarding in the 123-reg control panel sets up a 302 redirect, which search engines like!
I emailed 123-reg asking what the redirect was. Well, I’d checked before I emailed and it was 301. But their email responce this morning said they only did 302 redirects and sure enough, I checked my forwarding this morning and it’s a now a 302, hurrah!
(I checked using a ‘headers’ check on the extremely useful network-tools.com
Thanks 123-reg, now yet another reason to use them!

Domain Registry of America
I had (another) direct mail from this company this morning, offering their ‘wonderful’ domain renewal services. It was the first I’ve had in a while and I had hoped that I heard the last of them, but sadly no.
It seems that they’re up to their old tricks, once again informing me that two of my domains will expire in November and I need to act quickly and use their services to hold on to them. Of course, they fail to mention that my current registrar will let me renew the domains with them at a lot less cost than with the DROA!
For more on the DROA see:
http://www.synuk.com/droa/ and http://www.zandergraphics.net/articles/alerts/droa.html
As I’m in the U, I’ve lodged a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority. If you’re in the USA, you can initiate complaints with the Federal Trade Commission.
I’ll post updates on here as and when they happen!
Edit: I received a letter ‘in the post’ from the Advertising Standards Authority on Saturday morning (wow fast work!).
It’s a startard letter covering DRoA matter and included a ‘Background Briefing’ about the DRoA as well, so they must be a common compliant!
Sadly, as the mailing are sent from overseas (the USA and I’m in the UK), there’s not a whole lot that the ASA can do about them. Also noe the DRoA are nolonger using Royal Mail to distribute their mailing, the Royal Mail can’t help either! (The DRoA also only uses a remote mail box address in London which again complicates matters…)
The letter said that the ASA has also contacted the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission in the USA for their help. So perhaps a complaint to them is the next step…
