Fallout 4

April 20th, 2009

A new fallout game was just announced! I’ve loved this genre ever since the original, Wasteland. I played that game and Fountain of Dreams for many, many hours. I think i’ve played them both through in every way possible. And then Fallout 2 and then Fallout 3 came along.

I liked the Fallout 3 mechanics. The only thing that disappointed me was the level cap. Hopefully they’ve fixed that, or will fix that, before releasing the game.

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars in Linux

March 26th, 2009

Most apps are just fine downloading through apt-get or yum and installing the latest binary version built for your flavour of Linux, but Wine isn’t one of those in the list for me. I suggest compiling Wine from source for everything you need, because the old version available in your package manager is probably old and you’re going to run into problems where the next step is to patch wine to get the latest version anyway, so just do it right now and be done with it.

Download Wine, and any patches available.
Unpack the Wine archive

$ tar -xvjf wine-1.1.0.tar.bz2

Apply the patches

$ patch -p1 < ../cursor-patches-1.1.0.patch
$ patch -p1 < ../cnc3net-0.9.58.patch

Update wineserver with ‘tools/make_requests’
Update the configure script with ‘autoconf’
Configure

$ ./configure –prefix=$HOME/cnc3

Build

$ make depend && make

Install

$ make install

Install CNC3
If the installer asked you for disc 1 when trying to install, copy the setup files to your home directory and try installing from there.
Copy d3dx9_29.dll in Wine’s windows/system32 directory (~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32)
Disable compositing desktop managers before starting the game.

ooo! Shiny... cnc3, command & conquer, compile, games, Linux, source, wine

What happened to this free space-themed game?

November 29th, 2008

It was a free space-themed action MMO, but not like those cheap web based hacks that are complete garbage.  It had PVE and plenty of PVP.  Ok, it wasn’t all that great, and I only played a little, but it was the only MMO I liked.  I can’t stand World of Warcraft or any of those types of games.  Maybe someone should coin the phrase, “mmo-lite”.  There I just did.  All I can find now is a generic description of it.  If anyone recognizes this, they should be able to tell me what the heck happened to it.

Anonymous MMO Online is an action based Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) 3D Space Shooter. In Anonymous MMO Online, players can pilot their own space fighter ships (Gears) on an imaginary planet and upgrade skills or the Gear itself.

3D Space Shooting MMO

In Anonymous MMO, gamers have full control over the Gear’s control making it very different from the traditional RPG’s mouse click control method. This is a game based on Role-Playing Game (RPG) level concepts, but the fun and action of a First Person Shooter (FPS).

Diverse Selection of Fighting Gears

There are 4 kinds of Gears available to choose from, with each Gear having it’s individual unique characteristics. These characteristics differ in skill and items giving the player the opportunity to choose which items to equip to suit the player’s preferences. Gears can be upgraded to change color, performance, weapons, and so on in order to satisfy the gamer’s growth of the character.

Battle Formation/Brigade System

A formation system is possible that is similar to the generic party concept of a Role-Playing Game. There can be a maximum of 6 players in a formation (triangle formation, reverse triangle formation, X form formation, etc.) dependant on the formation leader at the center of the formation during battle. The performance of the formation depends on the player’s ability to work together and different formations require different skills and playing styles.

In addition to the formation, there is a brigade concept that is the equivalent to the guild term from other Massive Multiplayer Online games. A brigade can consist of 40 members, and have a specific brigade mark specified by the brigade leader to identify the brigade.

Battle/Large-Scale Battle

Anonymous MMO Online has an intense battle system including Player vs Environment (PVE) and Player vs Player (PVP) elements. PVE elements are used for standard leveling from experience points, while PVP elements can be seen through 1 on 1 battles, formation (party) battles, and even brigade battles. As opposing nations exist, there will be large scale nation wars throughout the game servers resulting in a possibility of occupying enemy forces and increasing profits for ones own nation. The 3-D aerial and ground battles will bring a whole new experience to the user.

Mission

A large number of missions are available which bring the storyline into perspective depending on the player’s chosen nation and have it’s share of rewards.

Top 5 reasons why Gears of War sucks

November 21st, 2008

First off, don’t be afraid of insane mode.  It just means you shoot from a little further back than normal most of the time and don’t bother trying to get up close to chainsaw anyone.  So you’re left with the multiplayer and the horde.  The horde mode really is the shining star here, but it’s too bad this is where things also began to fall apart.

It will take forever to form groups on xbox live.  And when you see your group fill up and you think it’s about to start, don’t count your chickens yet.  It will probably reset and start trying to find players all over again.  When you’ve played a full round of multiplayer in public xbox live and the round is finishes, you will get kicked out to the main screen and have to start matchmaking all over again.  The only save here is that if you’re in a party with friends, at least your group will stay together, but you’ll still have to wait forever to find another group to play against! If you join a multiplayer or horde match using public xbox live, you’ll start from wave one with no choice.  If, at any time in the middle of playing, someone leaves the match, a new person can’t join.  So you’re basically screwed.  This has a much worse effect in multiplayer.  If a player or two on your team leaves, too bad so sad.  Your team is probably going to lose.  It won’t balance the teams between matches, or let a new person join in the middle of a fight, a la call of duty style. The whole roll up on someone and blast them with a shotgun to the face trick from the first Gears of War hasn’t been fixed.  So forget the lancer or the rifle.  The shotgun is your best choice from your starting arsenal in multiplayer.  If you can get your hands on a bow or boomshot, by all means take it.  But it’s just too bad there are no modes where people get different guns, or where everyone only gets a specific gun.  It would have been nice to have a pistol+sniper battle with no machine guns allowed. Oooo, check out my gold lancer or gold rifle.  woop-dee-doo.  How about different models of each type of gun or a few more choices?  Sure there’s three different pistols, but there’s only 1 rifle, 1 lancer, 1 bow, 1 boomshot, and 1sniper rifle.  While the weapon types vary tremendously, the selection is rather limited. Be prepared to get stuck taking cover, or going into cover facing the wrong way.  It’s just too bad that Geow2 is basically Geow1 all over again with new maps and a few new guns!

And my bonus gripe:  In the campaign mode, you’ll find yourself running around as a group of 4, sometimes splitting into 2 and 2.  Why couldn’t they have made it FOUR PLAYER CO-OP?!  Tweak the story a little here and there and wam, it would have been great.  I give this game a 7 out of 10.  And no, i’m not paid to rate this game at all.  After the initial wow factor wears off, you’re left with just “meh”.  Screw this, i’m going back to Call of Duty 4…

The easy way to domination in Saints Row 2

November 4th, 2008

There’s a lot to do in Saints Row 2, so in order to get from mission to mission the quickest, you’ll want to surround yourself with the fastest cars available.  Get to your crib and find the “Customize Gang” area.  You get three gang cars that will randomly appear throughout the game in your hoods.  Ditch the slow ones you start with and use some exotics and maybe throw in a hummer or 4 door sport sedan.

This will make it easier to get to wherever you want to be because whenever you’re in your gang lands, you’ll see your cars all over the place.  When you see one, just press up on the dpad to recruit the driver and he’ll stop the car and get out immediately.  Normally when you try to carjack exotics on the street, they take off as soon as you make your move.  I like the exotics because they turn and brake quickly and get up to full speed the fastest, but it seems like all cars have the same top end speed.

Fly helicopters when you can.  The best ones in the game are the ambulance, police, and news helicopters.  That is, until you get the attack chopper.  But you won’t get to fly it outside of a mission until you’re at the end game.  All of the choppers fly about the same, but you’ll probably notice the Thompson chopper is almost broken.  You have to fly it pretty slow or else don’t even think about raising your altitude and flying straight at the same time.  You’ll end up upside down, crashing into stuff, and then exploding.

There were a lot of things in Grand Theft Auto that I didn’t like, such as annoying cousins calling me every five minutes wanting to get picked up.  The story line just got boring.  With all of the side missions and diversions available in Saints Row 2, you won’t get bored for a second.  And the story throughout the cut scenes is the best I’ve seen yet.  Other than the occasional glitch or complete freeze up, it’s one of the best games i’ve played. I like the idea of having melee styles, but the developers should have put more work into the hand to hand combat system
