Beauty Pageant Designed To Fight Child Trafficking
Brein Consult, organisers of “Face of Tertiary” beauty pageant, on Friday launched the 2009 edition of the show, with a call on all Ghanaians to help in the fight against child trafficking.
The pageant, which would attract beauty queens from tertiary institutions, would be on the theme: “Defining a Role for Tertiary Institutions in Eradicating Child Trafficking in Ghana”, is slated for October 20.
Addressing media at the launch, Madam Christiana Nandara, Executive Director of Brein Consult, said the pageant was a novelty that sought to produce beauty queens who would use their beauty and intelligence to propagate a worthy cause.
She said the high rate of child trafficking in the country motivated her to make it the theme for this year’s pageant.
“In recent times, it has been estimated that 40 per cent of all children in the country are engaged in some form of economic activity including the worst forms of child labour,” Madam Nandara explained.
Ms Florence Quartey, a representative of the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs (MOWAC), said child trafficking was a child right and developmental issue, which needed urgent attention.
“It requires an action oriented research, multidimensional policy measures and aggressive operational responses.” She cited poverty, weak governance, armed conflicts and lack of effective protection against discrimination and exploitation as some of the root causes of the menace.

American Child Sex Slaves are Being Arrested, not Rescued
Washington, D.C. – (July 14, 2009) Shared Hope International will release a groundbreaking report on child sex trafficking in the United States at the Congressional Human Trafficking Briefing on Capitol Hill hosted by the Human Trafficking Caucus and Victims’ Rights Caucus led by Congressman Poe (TX) and Congressman Smith (NJ), long-time advocates for victims protections. Former Congresswoman Linda Smith (1994-98), Founder of Shared Hope International, along with representatives from the Department of Justice and President of The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Ernie Allen, will present and comment on the findings of more than four years of research in America. Shared Hope International’s National Report on Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking, America’s Prostituted Children highlights the harsh reality that hundreds of thousands of American children are victimized through sex trafficking in the United States driven by the demand for the commercial sex acts they perform. A child sex trafficking victim who is purchased for sex by 5 different men per night, 5 nights per week for an average of 5 years would have been raped by 6,000 buyers during her victimization through prostitution. Many of these child rapists are never charged or prosecuted while the young victims’ lives are destroyed.

Congratulations to Brein Consult on this approach. Each person who cares about children can find something to do that will curtail sex trafficking. The use of a pageant to call attention to the crime is an example of the kind of creativity this issue needs to build public awareness. Certainly there are many other ways. SharedHope International’s concern for trafficking in the United States is vital. So many Americans falsely assume that this is solely a third world country issue. With 400,000 child prostitutes in the U.S., we don’t have to look overseas to find children who need to be rescued. Our problem here is widespread complacency. Ways must be found to make the trafficking visible. That’s the last thing the traffickers want.
