Today I read a blog/article written by Sandra Lee on May 4, 2009 for NJ.com.  The subject of her blog was her toddler’s critical reaction to a short haircut she recently had her hairstylist create on her previously longer hair.  Her almost 3 year old wanted Sandra to put her old hair back, which made Sandra feel “self-conscious” and comforted by the fact her hair would eventually grow back.

Although this has a humorous twist of mother and daughter reactions to the mom’s new haircut, the reaction of loved ones to our hairstyles may not always be what we hoped or wished for.  Some loved ones react more strongly than others and a lot may depend on how drastic the change is.  However, the eternal question exists of whether or not we should wear our hair to please our loved ones or not?

For every person in the Universe this question of whether we wear our hair for ourselves or others will bring different answers. (more…)

Session stylist Massimo Di Stefano and colorist Lesley Lawson officially unveiled Schwarzkopf’s Essential Looks 111 Edition to a crowd of hairdressers at the company’s London Academy.

As well as being Schwarzkopf’s trend collection for the season, 111 Edition celebrates Schwarzkopf’s 111 year anniversary and was shot in Berlin where the company launched in a chemist over a century ago.

Introducing the new Essential Looks collection, Technical Educator Kim Brady said: “In Germany all the same numbers, like 111 is a lucky sign - and in the current time it is nice to have some luck behind us.”

Schwarzkopf kicked off their year of festivities with a gala event in Munich that was enjoyed by with over 400 international guests gathering to celebrate 11 decades of the company’s achievements in hair.

Describing the Essential Looks 111 Edition Part One Global Ambassador Massimo says: “This season hair plays such a strong part of the overall fashion directions, that it is an essential part of everyone’s wardrobe. (more…)

The lovely Drew Barrymore recently visited Ellen Degeneres to promote her new movie, He’s Just Not That Into You.  When introducing Drew the funnylady reminded her audience that Drew Barrymore has been a movie star since she was seven years old.  During her fabulous interview Drew discussed her ever changing hair colors and her hairstyles.

Sleek Ruby Red Silk Rose Print Dress

Looking really gorgeous in a sleek ruby red silk sleeveless gown with roses and a scoop style neck she danced onto the stage in high heels.  Her hair was a beautiful shade of light baby blonde and coiffed into a sleek French Twist style of updo.  Drew continued dancing with the hostess and appeared to be having lots of fun until the music finally stopped and both women sat down on the stage. Of course you have to know that as I was watching the new He’s Just Not That Into You (HJNTIY) I had my eyes clamped onto the screen looking for hair accessories.

There is a long history of major films, Catwalk events and celebrity Red Carpets influencing hair accessory trends.

What did I see?  Several incidences of hair accessories although the biggest trend was for small “baby” barrettes, tiny “claw” clips and a few sleep clip type of accessories.

The fashions wore in the film by the ladies, for the most part, was very casual for the majority of the scenes featuring very cute jeans and a wide ranges of tops. There were two weddings but even those were low key fashion events with the brides wearing simple bridal styles.

The fashions worn in the office by the three co-workers - Jennifer Aniston, Ginnifer Goodwin and Jennifer Connolly - are simple, elegant but dressy and cute, cute, cute. (more…)

In cosmetology school one of the basic principles taught are the areas of the head.  It’s important for hairdressers to understand the different areas of the head for the purposes of cutting and styling hair.

Since every hair cut and hairstyle is based upon a series of lines and angles, its so important to understand all the different areas of the head.

Areas Of The Human Head

Consumers should become acquainted with the areas of the head in order to be able to recreate various hairstyles they might see on the Web or in popular hair magazines.

With that goal in mind I have listed the different areas of the human head:

1.  Top Of The Head

The top of the head is defined by the parietal ridge which is defined as the widest area of the head, starting at the temples and ending at the bottom of the crown. This area is found by placing a comb flat on the top of the head at the sides.  Where the head starts to curve away is the parietal ridge.  This is also often referred to as the crest area.

By locating the parietal ridge you can identify which hair grows on the top of the head.  The hair that grows here “lies” on the head.

Hair that grows below the parietal ridge or the crest of the head “hangs” rather than “lies”.  Hair on the very top of the head behaves differently than hair on the sides and the back. (more…)
