I’ve embarked on a new career change, and the most nervous thing is the probation period. Why? Well, because there are many valid reasons to feel apprehensive. Probation means little job security.
The idea is to remain as positive, tell yourself there’s no reason to fear probation or to throw in the towel when you’re faced with obstacles. Let your skills and efforts shine brighter because this is the chance to maximize your potential to show the new employers that you’re a keeper,
Don’t be afraid to succeed. Don’t let the worst case scenario play in your head and influence your productivity. Your employer can terminate your service without any cause.
I’m gonna work like I already owned the job. Consistency is the key – from job performances to sick days. Start building your reputation as someone who’s consistent, don’t work hard now and be a slacker later. But, don’t overwork yourself to the ground either. Find the right balance.
Only make realistic promises and you’ll earn their respect and trust in your abilities. Turn it the other way round, by the end of the probation, the decision to remain or leave, is ultimately yours.
Understand the basics of your job requirements – get a complete job description. Throw in some overtime work only if necessary to practice the required set of skills.
One thing I’ve mastered is being able to work independently and as part of a team as well. I used managed a team of 20+ staff in my previous company, so that experience will certainly help me in people management.
The best way to go about the probation is also to learn about the company, their products and services, profitability, their goals, policies and organization structure in further detail.
Show that you’re in it for the long haul. Try to build a friendly yet professional rapport with your superior. Also, if you’re unsure about your superior’s instruction, always seek clarification. Pretending to understanding will only make you an idiot.
Keep constant communication with your boss on your progress and any improvements needed. Don’t forget your colleagues too – be receptive and supportive – to criticism and input.
If you’re invited to social gatherings outside work, GO. The simplest yet direct of all, don’t give them a reason to fire you.

just waiting for the probation period to be over and get my extra allowance ! my efforts been kinda extreme i guess, i’m actually making an effort to speak and learn mandarin so that i can work with the China-infested environment. and being away from home just makes it harder…and if there is a social gathering i dont have grounds to reject in any case since i’m in indo…but just make the best out of it. I think along the way, if we’re lucky we might even find someone whom we can call as comrades at work that just makes the journey all the more easier. found one yet, dan? i’m lucky i found one in Malaysia and a lot more in Indonesia….
