If you’re a big Guinness Stout like I am (beer’s for pussies!), then I’m sure you have came across the Guinness Surger. If you haven’t, then you’re missing a lot!

What’s a Guinness Surger you ask? Well, see the photo above, the thingamajig next to the draft unit? That’s a surger. What is does is that is uses ultrasonic waves to stimulate the molecules of your pint of stout so you Guinness is transformed into a gold.

How does it work? Well, while the “home” units is not readily available, unlike in the UK. I watched what the bartender did.

The stout that he used was from the Guinness surger cans, the half a pint is filled up to the brim. Then he pours water onto the tray at the top of the Surger unit, and places the half-pint onto the tray. All he does then is to hit the button and waits for a couple of minutes. I tell you, when you chug the stout down your throat, you start to believe that you’re at St James’ Gate, at the edge of heaven.

Before Surger

During Surger

After Surger
Can’t tell the difference?

The half-pint of Guinness Draught turns from brown to black topped with a tight creamy white head. At the touch of a button, the Surger sends an ultra-sonic pulse through the pint glass, releasing the gases in the Guinness beer, which then settles into a velvety pint with creamy head. Yummy!

Go forth and seek the Surger in Malaysia! Hopefully we’d be able to buy the home units like the folks in UK enjoy. Trust me, it’s better than a regular Guinness Stout draught – it’s really really really smooooth.

Don’t know if anyone will read this anytime soon since no ones been here since April but just to let everyone know, The surger unit is available in the United States. Just bought one on ebay for $100 brand new. It takes a bit to find the surger beer cans because no one has a clue what your talking about but my rinky dink little liquor store guy got it for me with a simple phone call to his distributor. I just told him what I was looking for and to check the Guinness site out to see it for himself. It comes in 6 4pack 14.5 oz cans for $47. Pretty awesome. My husband loves it. The unit is easy to use. All Guinness drinker know that you drink Guinness at 5 degrees celcius, warmer than the crap beer and that is the key to the surger unit. If the beer is too cold the ultra sonic pulse won’t happen. So, to solve that I bought hubby a beer fridge for his Guinness. I know, Lucky Man to have such a great wife.
So all you Guinness Drinkers Happy News and don’t let them tell you it’s not available in the U.S. I even had a Guinness Rep try to tell me that so they don’t know much either. I did his job for him. How sad.

A Research Queen – Coolness! Pity I can’t get it here in Malaysia!
December 5th, 2008 at 10:24pm
someone tell me PLEASE!!! where I can get guinness surger cans in the world??!! them bastards guinness and tesco have stopped selling them in the UK, I am, gutted!
someone send them to me! I will give you money!
December 5th, 2008 at 11:22pm
John Barnet Denisov – Damn! Why did they do that? That’s sacrilege!!!
December 13th, 2008 at 9:30pm
I know!
Diageo blame poor sales and a lack of interest, however, the surger was never advertised at all, most people I know found out about them by accident by stumbling upon them in tesco, and thats the other problem, guinness only made the surger and cans availible through one bloody supermarket chain!
Everyone knows guinness’ reputation for award-winning T.V ads, yet no effort was made to advertise the surger.
And they’re probably wondering why the sales werent that good – cos no-one knew about it Diageo!
A Research Queen, you MUST tell me your supplier! Please!
December 14th, 2008 at 10:22pm
John Barnet Denisov – You’re right, I too stumbled upon it, and now it’s GONE!

I love my Guinness Surger and was so disappointed when the UK home trial failed.
I agree that it was down to poor advertising and even wrote to Guinness/Diageo about it. I received a few phonecalls and emails from them but the guy I spoke to couldn’t do anything about it as the decision was made “from above”.
I think that the cans are still available to “on-trade” customers in the UK ie Bars, Restaurants etc, but I have been unable to track down any suppliers as yet.
I can actually get 330ml Surger cans from a couple of contacts I have in Europe. It’s not the cheapest way of getting them, but if you enjoy the Surger cans as much as I do then it’s worth it. It’s a bit crazy that the stuff is canned down in Runcorn, England and for me to get it in Scotland I have to import it back to the UK via Italy and Austria!!
