I wanted to talk about this topic “Are blogs too perÂsonal?†for the last couÂple of weeks and even more so after one of my closÂest friends closed down her blog due to the off-line world findÂing it. After going through my blog roll recently more and more blogs are becomÂing blogs writÂten about a cerÂtain topic, for examÂple, mine norÂmally is being fruÂgal and green which I think is a great idea and I love to see difÂferÂent views but then again I like to see some perÂsonal conÂtent as well, what’s hapÂpenÂing in their lives.
I started thinkÂing whether or not my blog is too perÂsonal and I disÂcussed with my husÂband and my best friend yesÂterÂday, I don’t really write like I use to about the going ons in my life well not the really perÂsonal ones because unless it is out in the open then why put it on the interÂnet where anyÂone can see it at the end of the day I know my blog is on the interÂnet so it is pretty much pubÂlic and yes I do go by a nickÂname (same one for the last 10 years) but I now have twitÂter and a lot of my off-line friends have twitÂter now so they have access to my blog, plus if you know my nickÂname you could pretty much just find me straight away.
I realised also I don’t think I have ever refer to my husÂband by his name in the whole three years of being with him which is pretty impresÂsive as I forÂget quite a bit that I haven’t unless I have added you to faceÂbook then you know my own name and his name, he has read my blog now and then but isn’t really that interÂested in it unless I am talkÂing about the money I have made from it
My parÂents know of my blog, I don’t think they really read it.
I really respect the ladies like Jenn and Amanda who don’t hide anyÂthing and for that reaÂson readÂing their blogs makes me feel like I know them better.
AnyÂway I am ramÂbling and I have to eat before my driÂving lesÂson, I am curiÂous where do you draw the line on your own blogs?

I think it depends on how much perÂsonal you want the blog to be. While mine is “perÂsonal†per se, it’s not exactly 100% perÂsonal. I actuÂally am careÂful about what I post on there comÂpared to my friends-locked LJ because of my job and its unique environment …
Not to menÂtion my dad reads my blog, so I am defÂiÂnitely not going to post up like my sex life or someÂthing on there LOL.

I think this is very subÂjecÂtive. I perÂsonal folÂlow the “If you wouldn’t say it in a crowded street, Don’t say it on the net†phiÂlosÂoÂphy. I will write about my life but I tend to omit names and places.
I have seen them used to great effect in a more intiÂmate way howÂever. My cousin (And she won’t mind me telling you this) blogged conÂstantly throughÂout the pregÂnancy, learnÂing of the comÂpliÂcaÂtions and death of her daughÂter, aged 30 hours.
She was very open and drew a lot of comÂfort from peoÂple comÂments all the way through. It also served a more pracÂtiÂcal purÂpose seeÂing as she lives in AmsÂterÂdam and her famÂily are here in EngÂland. She, like you, howÂever always used nickÂnames just in case.
UltiÂmately what you post on your blog is up to you. There is no fixed forÂmat for one (Although origÂiÂnally they where never intended to be perÂsonal diary they are now). It’s a case of do whatÂever you get the most out of.

@ Luke, totally agree with you there about not sayÂing it in a crowded street and I think that comÂments do bring great comÂfort to peoÂple durÂing hard times.

and its also what got me interÂested in blogÂging in the first place. i can underÂstand not wantÂing to reveal imporÂtant details about where you live or your name but othÂerÂwise i say blog what you want to!

I may be inclined to say yes. I don’t really want peoÂple in my offline life visÂitÂing my blog. Some know I have one, but that’s my place to talk about my life, the peoÂple in it, etc etc. Some things are very perÂsonal to me, and it’s nice to be able to talk and debate with myself and othÂers, that are a unbiÂased 3rd party.
It really depends on how you write. Some peoÂple even have a few difÂferÂent blogs, one is more perÂsonal and priÂvate and the other is more genÂeral. Either way I still love havÂing my blog.
