No Copy and Paste on iPhone?

Apple says adding copy and paste features for the iPhone  isn’t a priority. Luckily, some developers have taken the matters into their own hands. Developers have created a new framework called OpenClip that allows applications (programs) to pass data between themselves.

Unfortunately, the new tools does not work with Apple’s built-in applications (programs). The iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit) agreement forbids background processes and plugins, which makes it difficult for applications to communicate with each other.

Zac White, the developer who started the OpenClip foundation, went around the SDK limitations by using a shared space on the iPhone. By looking into the Documents folder of other applications, the application can get their pastes. If other developers who create applications for the iPhone include the OpenClip framework, this will enable applications to enable copy and paste between applications.

Note that OpenClip is not something that you can install on your iPhone. It is a framework that developers can integrate within their applications to give them copy and paste functionality with other installed iPhone applications.

As of this writing, only the following applications have pledged support for the framework to allow copy and paste in iPhone:

dialzero

twittelator

magicpad
