I’ve come down to the last month of Project 365 and find myself somewhat laid up. I dislocated my ankle stepping off the steps and now I’m not moving so good. Not that I can’t get around, it’s just a little slow and a little uncomfortable. Because of this, I’ve taken to looking for more things around the house that I can photograph still life. I’ve done this several times over the past year so I was looking for some little nook or cranny where I hadn’t poked my lens yet and discovered my little tool box. I started looking at stuff in there to photograph and this was the first thing that caught my eye. There’s a good chance that this little box will be the source of inspiration for the next several days until I’m moving around a little better.
I was reading an article from my favorite photographer, David duChemin, that talked about trying some different angles with things you photograph a lot. Every year I photograph the blooming cactus on the ranch, so I decided to try shooting them from underneath. I was quite surprised and pleased with the results.

Out on the ranch, if you begin moving stuff that’s sat for awhile, there is not telling what will pop out. Just moving a few pieces of wood, disturbed the Giant Red Headed Centipede. These things are venomous and a sting is quite painful. Trust me. I found three of these in about 20 minutes. They are pretty fast so shooting them close was difficult. These were the best I got.
