Buffalo Bill’s: Pumpkin Ale

January 10, 2008 by CarpetGuy · Comments Off

buffalobills pumpkinbottle Buffalo Bill’s: Pumpkin AleBuffalo Bill’s Brewery: Pumpkin Ale is a beer that is of course a seasonal item, and yes it is January and this review could be considered to be a bit late, but, here it is anyway.

No, I am not a big fruit beer fan, but this stuff is pretty good. I decided to get a second opinion on it before I wrote this because I am a Hophead and I wanted to be fair, so, I gave a bottle to my mom! She is not a beer drinker, although she does like Arrogant Bastard, she just doesn’t drink much of anything. Her first sip of this beer, her eyes lit up! She told me she wants more of this Pumpkin Ale! I was shocked and gave her 3 of the beers in the six pack!

My opinion of this beer is simple, it is good, it is different, and no, it doesn’t taste like pumpkin pie.

Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale has a strong resemblance to a German Hefe Weizen that I used to drink when I lived there, this is a spiciness that I believe comes from not just the cinnamon and spices, but it is also the yeast that gives it a bit of a clove flavor.

I really like this beer, but it doesn’t bother me that I won’t find it again until next year. If anyone sees this in the store, buy it, try it, and see what you think, I feel it is worth drinking  and I will get more next year. I just wonder if I can find any of their other beers?  If so I will try them too.

Check out the Buffalo Bill’s website, it is also pretty unique! They don’t offer much information about their beers but this is a Brew-Pub/ Brewery that sounds like a good place to go and they have a nice website.

If you have tried this beer, any of their other beers, or have been to the restaurant, post a comment and tell us about it!

Dear St. Arnold’s Army:

QUICK SURVEY, VALUABLE INFORMATION
As seems to be the case, every few years we have a group of business
school students that need a project and we need some information. It’s a
symbiotic relationship. So help them get an “A” and help us get some
info. It is a very short survey and should take 5 minutes or less to
complete. We’re especially interested in everybody’s zip code as we are
scouring the city for a potential new location for the brewery.
Here’s the link:

After that hard work, you should now reward yourself with a Saint
Arnold!

FUN AT BOONDOGGLES IN THE CLEAR LAKE AREA THIS SATURDAY AFTERNOON
People living south of downtown have often requested that we do more in
their neck of the woods. Well, this event should fit the bill! This
Saturday, September 15 at Boondoggles, a keg of Divine Reserve No. 5
and a cask of Oktoberfest (the only one made this year) will be tapped
while merriment breaks out. The tapping will occur at 2 PM and the
merriment will continue until it’s all gone (the beer anyway – the merriment
might continue).
Event: Divine and Oktoberfest at Boondoggles
Date: Saturday, September 15
Time: 2 PM until ???
Address: 4106 NASA Rd 1, Seabrook, TX 77586-6236

COME SEE OUR VIDEO BLOGS
We’ve added a couple more Saint Arnold Video News blogs on our website,
so go check them out. The latest is all about Divine Reserve No. 5
and the previous one is about delicious Assburn hot sauce which is made
locally and uses Fancy Lawnmower Beer as an ingredient. Assburn also
won 1st place in the Commercial Pepper Sauce category last month in
Austin’s Hot Sauce Festival. (Background noises make the audio a little
tricky early on in that blog, but it gets better.)

AND NOW, APPEARING TOMORROW, DIVINE RESERVE NO. 5
Yes, the much anticipated release of Divine Reserve No. 5 will occur
tomorrow, Tuesday, September 11. Most stores will be receiving it
tomorrow, but some have a delivery day later in the week. This beer is a
Russian Imperial Stout and was inspired by Mike Heniff’s winning entry in
this year’s Big Batch Brew Bash. It’s deep black in color with a dark
tan head. The aroma is sweet coffee and chocolate with some alcohol
coming through (it is around 10% after all.) The predominant flavors are
coffee, roast and chocolate. It has a malty sweetness and a hoppy
spiciness. The bitter chases the sweetness but never quite catches up.
It is perfect to enjoy while eating some dark bittersweet chocolate or a
bowl of vanilla ice cream. I went a step further and attempted making
an ice cream float with it – not recommended. We brewed this beer
into one of our larger fermenters, so hopefully those of you who have been
frustrated in the past in your attempts to find a Divine Reserve w
ill be rewarded this time. We also made a very limited number of kegs
of this beer and these will also be going out to select draft
establishments tomorrow. It will be released in Houston, DFW and San Antonio
tomorrow. Word is that our Austin distributor jumped the gun and it
started going out on Friday. For a complete description of this beer:
http://saintarnold.com/beers/divine.html

We are up 28% so far this year, so time to get back to brewing. Thanks
for all of your support!

Cheers!

St. Arnold’s Army: Newsletter

August 27, 2007 by CarpetGuy · Comments Off

Dear St. Arnold’s Army:

Oh, we have a busy month ahead of us! So let’s proceed with the
meeting:

Here are the topics to be discussed:
Pub Crawl this Friday, August 31
Beer & Cheese Tasting on Saturday, September 8 at the Tasting Room
Texans Game outing Sunday, September 23
Now hiring for an additional brewing/kegging position

OKTOBERFEST PUB CRAWL THIS FRIDAY (8/31) IN SHEPHERD PLAZA AREA
To celebrate and sweat the rolling out of Oktoberfest, we will be
roaming the greater Shepherd Plaza area this Friday evening seeking
establishments that might be serving this fine beverage. Again we will be
using the open house method with the communal finish that has proved so
successful. And the prize will be the popular hop-frosted pub crawl pint
glass with little footprints wrapping their way around the glass.
Here’s how it works:
We will be signing tickets at all four of the first four stops for
three hours (except one that we’ll only be at for two hours) so people can
split up between the establishments. You will get your ticket at
whichever stop you decide to visit first. But, VERY IMPORTANT, we will only
be handing out the tickets between 6 PM and 7 PM (or very shortly
thereafter). Thus, you still need to start between 6 and 7. Then, at 9
PM, everybody will gather at one final stop and that is where we will
award the glasses. The prize for making all four stops will be the Pub
Crawl pint glass. We will have a large but limited supply. And as
always, designated drivers are both eligible for the award and encouraged to
attend! So here is the layout. As always, we can’t tell you exactly
where we will be, but here are some general directions:

6 PM till 8 PM:
We will look for one on Norfolk between Kirby and Greenbriar (food
available).
6 PM till 9 PM:
We will look for two around Portsmouth and Sandman in the middle of the
Shepherd Plaza area (food available at one of them).
We will look for another along Greenbriar between Norfolk and SW
Freeway.

At 9:00 we will go to the corner of Portsmouth and Morningside to
finish the crawl. There may even be two places very close to each other.
One of the establishments may have food.

Remember that cash is helpful, be kind to your waitstaff, and always,
always appear in public enjoying a Saint Arnold. We hold those that
arrange for transportation to and from or use designated drivers in the
highest regard!

SAINT ARNOLD & CHEESE PAIRING AT THE TASTING ROOM ON SATURDAY, SEPT 8
When enjoying some good food, what adult beverage is best to pair with
it? St. Arnold, of course! We hope to be doing many beer & food
events in the future, and our first one is going to be on Saturday,
September 8 at the Tasting Room at Uptown Park. We have been working with the
Houston Dairymaids, two women who promote and sell artisan Texas
cheeses (http://www.houstondairymaids.com), to put this together. Along with
the Tasting Room crew, we all sat down and created a St. Arnold &
cheese pairing menu. Cost is $20 per person. This will include 6 cheeses
and 7 beers, including Divine Reserve No. 5. Cheeses and beers will be
available for purchase after the event as well. Attendance will be
limited so sign up quickly. Here is the info:
Event: St. Arnold & Texas Cheese pairing
Where: The Tasting Room at Uptown Park (off West Loop and Post Oak
Blvd)
Date: Saturday, September 8
Time: 4:00 to 5:30 PM (arrive by 4 PM please)
Cost: $20, seating is very limited
For tickets, please call The Tasting Room events line at 713-622-4477.

TEXANS VS COLTS BUS TRIP ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
The Texans have looked much improved this preseason so we are eagerly
awaiting the start of the regular season and to see if we can repeat a
victory over last year’s Super Bowl Champion Colts. For this, we are
organizing a special bus trip to the game. We purchased a block of seats
in the endzone, mezzanine level. We will be having everybody gather
at the brewery Sunday morning. The bus will leave very shortly after 9
AM and take everyone to our tailgating tent in the parking lot for some
pregame fun. Then we will go in and hopefully watch our Texans give a
butt-kicking to the Colts! After the game, the bus will return
everybody to their cars in our parking lot. The brewery will not be open
upon return. Here are the details:
Event: Bus trip to Texans vs Indianapolis Colts
Date: Sunday, September 23
Time: Meet at the brewery, arriving shortly before 9 AM. We are not
allowed to serve beer at that hour. Sorry!
Bus leaves: About 9 AM
Tailgating in Reliant Stadium Parking Lot: Until we go into the game.
Bus return to brewery: After the game
Price: $80 (includes bus roundtrip and Texans ticket)

ann@saintarnold.com). She will need a credit card number, cash or check
in order to hold the reservation. Limited space!_ For reservations, please call or email Ann (713-686-9494 or

JOIN OUR SAINT ARNOLD BREWING TEAM!
It seems like just yesterday that we were looking for more people to
hire. And here we are doing it again! That’s growth for you. We are
hiring for an additional entry level brewing/kegging/production position.
If you are interested in working here, please send a resume to Ann
(ann@saintarnold.com or fax to 713-686-9474).

DIVINE RESERVE NO. 5 TO BE RELEASED ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11
Watch for more info on this.

Thanks again for all of your support! And please remember to recycle
your 6 pack carriers.

Cheers!

OUR FINAL ASTROS BUS TRIP ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 25 VS PIRATES
It may be hard to believe, but the Astros have a 3-0 record for our bus
trips. This one will be on a Saturday too. We will meet here at the
brewery at 2:30 for refreshments, then the bus will leave at 3:30 and
head downtown seeking a fine, multi-tap, UFO themed establishment for some
pre-game beverages. Then at 5:30, we’ll meander over to MinuteMaid for
the 6:05 opening pitch to watch the Astros beat the Pirates. After the
game, the bus will return everybody to their vehicles here at the
brewery.
Also, to create our feeling of solidarity, and to ease with wardrobe
decisions, we are asking attendees to wear a hopwaiian shirt if they have
one. This will also simplify tracking everybody down as we get back
onto the bus. This is not a requirement, just a request. If you either
don’t have one or your old one is looking faded, we are again offering a

Alaskan Brewing

August 13, 2007 by CarpetGuy · Comments Off

Alaskan Brewing
by David Riewe

The Alaskan brewing company is the oldest operating brewery in Alaska, with their amber beer being their most popular brand. They produce two other brands as well, pale ale and Alaskan frontier amber. If you enjoy fresh amber beer, Alaskan brewing is what you want.

As you may already know, brewing beer in Alaska is very hard to do. The coastal community of Juneau doesn’t have road connections to the lower 48 states, so everything arrives and leaves by water or air, with weather always having the final say.

In 1986, the Alaskan brewing company became the 67th brewery to operate in the United States and the only one to operate in Alaska. Since that time, Alaskan brewery has received more than 30 major medals and awards, including the best beer in the nation award during the 1988 Great American Beer Festival.

The popularity of their beers has led to a great amount of efforts to keep up with the demand from consumers. They also hold the unnofficial record for the production on a 10 barrel brewing system, which produces an amazing 42 batches a week.

The Alaskan Brewery offers several different styles of brew as well, which are listed below:

1. Amber – This is the company’s flagship beer, based on a turn of the century recipe that was used to quench the thirst of the miners during the Gold Rush era. It provides a smooth, malty, rich taste that goes well with meals – or friends.

2. Pale – Pale is fresh, crips, and inviting. Alaskan pale is great with crab, pawns, and salads. The floral aroma of the hops is derived from dry hopping the tanks during the entire fermentation process.

3. Stout – The oatmeal style beer of stout doesn’t have the harshness of other stouts. Great with chocolate and hearty meals, stout is also ideal to enjoy while walking in the snow.

4. ESB – If you like hops, the infusion of hops in this delight will amaze your nose while the refreshing cascade hops will provide a wonderful crispness to both the flavor and the finish. This beer is great with spicy food, wild game, and other wintery food.

5. Smoked porter – Very exclusive, Alaskan smoked porter has a world class reputation for its excellence. Brewed in the fall, this beer is ideal for storing in the cellar for later enjoyment.

6. Winter ale – This tender brew of spruce trees has been used for brewing in Alaska since the late 1700s.
