Canada, Texas and Europe: Still Rambling
By Molly Noble Bull with Cathi-Lyn Dyck
Molly: I would love to really visit Canada someday. Do you live in Alberta maybe or near there?
Cat: I live about a day’s drive from Alberta, and there’s another province between here and there. Niagara Falls is twice as far the other direction. But we have real cowboys here in Manitoba too. Did growing up country-style have any positive influences on your development as a writer? Any negative ones?
Molly: In my opinion, everything about growing up in the country or in a small town is positive. I wouldn’t trade the experiences I have had for anything. If there was a nagative side, it might be that you are sometimes cut off from medical help when you need it.
I remember hearing my mother say that when she was a little girl her cowboy father was kicked in the mouth by a horse. And what did my grandmother do? She got her sewing box, threaded a needle and sewed up my grandfather’s face.
I’m sure that scene will end up in one of my books someday.
Cat: We had a neighbor kid land in the ICU from a horse kick to the face. Ick. New topic. Tell me about the award Sanctuary just won - pretty snazzy, eh?
Molly: Yep. My newest long historical, Sanctuary, won the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence 2008 in the Inspirational category. And if that isn’t snazzy, I don’t know what is. Sanctuary was one of six finalists, and I was thrilled to be a finalist. Winning the contest in the Inspirational category was over the top.
The Gayle Wilson is a national contest sponsored by the Southern Magic chapter of RWA and located in Birmingham, Alabama. A photo of the cover of Sanctuary, along with the covers of the books in the other categories, will appear in the August issue of the RWR–the official magazine of Romance Writers of America. I also won an engraved bookmark and a banner that I can cut and paste to my website. Or let somebody else cut and paste it since I don’t know how to do it. I am not very computer savvy. I just write books and send emails.
Sanctuary is a fast-paced adventure story set in France in 1740 and the first of three historical novels in the Faith of Our Fathers series about the Huguenots and forgiving the unforgivable.
I am a member of American Christian Fiction Writers, but I am not a member of Romance Writers of America. However, sometimes I enter RWA chapter contests where RWA membership is not required. The Gayle Wilson was one of a couple of RWA contests that I sometimes enter.
Cat: Sanctuary really is a fascinating story, with a lot of depth and colour besides the romantic plot. I knew the Huguenots originated in France, But I never thought through the possibility of a connection to the British Isles, the escape route your hero and heroine follow in the sequel. Intriguing. Thanks for joining us here, Molly, and best wishes for your project.
