For a long time I resisted using ‘lol’ because I took most web phenomena, among many other things, far too literally. Whenever I laugh it comes out ‘Haha,’ which I would faithfully transcribe.

But when I catch up on something like Garfield minus Garfield …I snort. I chortle. Sometimes I have to stealthily make sure there’s no snortle hanging out of my nose. But it’s worth it, so go lol your heart out!
