Menu For Hope 2007 - Prizes

December 9, 2007 |

Menu For Hope is an annual fund raising event organized by Pim Techamuanvivit @ Chez Pim.

Last year, this effort by the food blogging community raised $62,925.12 for the United Nations World Food Programme. Collectively with our fellow bloggers and our readers, we hope to surpass last year’s effort. Bee of Rasa Malaysia is co-ordinating the U.S. West Coast effort.

Menu For Hope began in the aftermath of the devastating tsunami in South and Southeast Asia. Now in its fourth year, it has earmarked this year’s donation for the U.N. World Food Programme’s school lunch program in Lesotho, Africa.

As Adlai Stevenson poined out, “A hungry man is not a free man.”

Providing food for the children not only keeps them alive, but helps them stay in school so that they learn the skills to feed themselves in the future.

The program in Lesotho is a model in local procurement - buying food locally to support local farmers and the local economy. Instead of shipping surplus corn across the ocean, the WFP is buying directly from local subsistent farmers who practice conservation farming methods in Lesotho to feed the children there.

Ten dollars can change a child’s life in Lesotho. It will also offer you the chance to participate in a raffle, towards which we, at Jugalbandi, are offering two prizes. Donations will be accepted between today and December 21. The raffle results will be announced on January 9. Details on how to donate below.

Let us reach out to those whose lives can change drastically with a tiny effort on our parts.

This is the latest version of the hugely popular digital photography manual by Ben Long that covers everything from the inner workings of the camera to the subtle intricacies of image editing software. More about it HERE.

In the authors’ words,

While creating this book we have taken into account the different ways we cook and eat food in modern life and the new kinds of ingredients that are now readily available. This book adapts a contemporary style of cooking great tasting food for easy entertaining or a busy lifestyle. It provides a wonderful insight into the richly diverse nation of India and the many flavors it brings to our tables.
