Why I like to grow my own vegies

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Taco’s for dinner last night… I went to the shops and bought what I needed and then checked the receipt when I got home. $5.99 for an iceberg lettuce and $3.87 for a single tomato!!!!! This was at our local supermarket that is normally really good with prices, it wasn’t organic food or anything, although that may have been cheaper! Far out…….

Goldwork Class – Week 1

Posted under Crafty Stuff, Goldwork

Yesterday (wednesday) I did the first of three goldwork classes with Alison Cole. The project we are working on is called “Crewel Intentions” and is a goldwork sampler. Click here to see what the finished project will look like.

So after the first class, here is my work thus far. We’ve done the main stems (2 different gold threads), felt padding and gold kid leather on the leaf, and felt padding in the centre of the flower.

The classes are held in Ballarat, which is just over an hour’s drive from here. The drive yesterday took me almost two hours as we had one of the coldest nights on record and there was black ice and snow on the way! Not to mention the fact that it was really really cold!!!!

Sunday 22 July
Here’s the embroidery with the homework for the first week finished. The last of the stems done, felt padding on the honeysuckle leaves and rose leaf, and gold organza applied for the rose leaf. There is still an outline of the rest of the embroidery on the fabric, it just doesn’t show up in the pic! The gold organza will be trimmed later, when I’ve finished working on the leaf.

White Choc and Macadamia cookies

Posted under Cooking

I was given this basic recipe from a friend and then I added the white choc and macadamias to make my own version, it makes about four dozen biscuits. I LOVE white choc and macadamia cookies, but I really can’t justify paying $3 per biscuit at the shops! These taste just as good if not better than the bought ones!

Basic Recipe

Ingredients:
500g Butter (16oz)
1 cup caster sugar
5 cups Self Raising flour
1 can sweetened condensed milk

Method:
Cream butter and sugar, add milk, then slowly add flour. Mix well. Shape mixture into balls, flatten slightly with a fork and place onto a greased tray. Bake in a moderate oven for about 10 minutes until browned.

I added about 300gm white chocolate, bought in a block and just roughly cut into chunks, and 80-100gm macadamia nuts, also roughly chopped.

You can make all kinds of variations – try adding mini M&M’s, chocolate chips, sultanas, nuts or anything you fancy. If adding coconut, omit half a cup of the flour and add one cup of coconut.

Moving house…

Posted under Family, Venting

So after the parking drama’s and all in this house, we found another house, signed a twelve month lease and gave notice here, all about seven weeks ago…. That’s right, read the previous post, and we’re going back to Canberra in january, six months away!!!!! Thankfully we have a Defence Clause in the lease, which basically says if we get posted we can break the lease without penalty.

This week we’re moving into the new house. Love it. Big, spacey, room for my sewing, Eddie’s computer, big garage, heaps of parking, secure backyard, very nice. And we’re only going to be here for six months. Sigh…. then we get to move everything again….

We’re so over moving…. I just want to settle down permanently in our own house and know that we won’t have to move at someone else’s whim. I want to be able to decorate the house and not have to ask permission every time I want to hang a picture. I want to be able to plant a garden and know that I’ll be around to see it grow, and that the time and effort I put into improving the soil will be useful to me! It’s just a dream, it’s not going to happen for several years. I knew that when I married an army guy, but it’s just really irking me at the moment. I’ll get over it…..

And the big news is……

Posted under Family

Eddie’s being promoted to Warrant Officer and we’re being POSTED BACK TO CANBERRA IN JANUARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m really excited about his being promoted, I’m so proud of him I feel like bursting!!!!!! That’s just such a really cool thing, it’s totally God. Amazing what happens when you pray for your hubby’s career! Eddie didn’t think he would ever be promoted, in fact he was going to withdraw off the course because he didn’t think there was any point to it. I’m so proud of him for doing well, getting a good pass and now he’s being rewarded for all his hard work! You’re a champion babe!!!!

And we’re going back to Canberra!!!!!! Yippee!!!!!! I cried for six months when the army told us we were being posted, I’ve had such a hard time adjusting to being here and grieved for months after moving. I do love it here now, however I love Canberra more! When Eddie rang to ask me how I felt about taking a promotion and posting back to Canb I couldn’t answer him, I was crying!!! He asked if they were happy tears…. Oh Yeah!!!!!!!!!
