In 1891 the aging pope outlined what has become the basic Catholic position on the relationship between capital and labor. The encyclical Rerum Novarum, after calling attention to the evil conditions resulting from the Industrial Revolution, rejected socialism and took a strong stand for the Christian family as the most essential unit of society.
