Garden Update

It has been so long since I posted a garden update, I figured even though I don’t have a lot of good news or gardening tips, I needed to post something.
Right before we left on vacation I planted all my seedlings. They were doing pretty well and I wanted to get them in the ground before we left. What I hadn’t planned on was the torrential rains that came almost every day while we were gone. It washed out everything except one tomato plant and the strawberries (which were from last year). I returned home to nothing, except a mud pit.
After much thought and debate we decided that we did not have time to replant, because of our move and other commitments over the next few weeks. So we are just going to mulch over the plot and start again next year. I did give about half my plot to another lady who hopes to grow some pumpkins or corn. I hope she has success since it is still really muddy. Next year I am seriously considering raised beds. Opinions welcome…
As for the strawberries, we spent an evening picking them and they were delicious. We ended up with over 7 pounds of berries and will probably go back for more in the next day or two. Picking the berries helped me realize that this whole thing wasn’t a total loss and I do have hope for next summer. I will do things very different next year.

Here’s a helpful hint that came from an old magazine. Collect two litre (or the American version) pop bottles for your spring planting days. Cut off the bottom of the bottles and place overtop of the freshly planted seedlings – pushed into the dirt. Leave caps on during cool nights and off during warm days. They act like mini green houses.
This technique not only protects from frost, cut worms and cats – it has saved our little crop this year from the torrent of thunderstorms we have endured in our part of the world. It may look a little strange to those who pass by – but I still have a good garden to watch grow.

We HIGHLY recommend raised beds. We have “dirt problems” here too since we live within walking distance of Lake Michigan! LOL Thus, sand and clay abound!
If you plan the size out correct where you can walk between long “thin” beds, things can be planted closer together because you don’t need space to get between everything.
We started with three beds – one holding 10 or so tomato plants alone. The plants did so well and grew so large that they were nearly as tall as DaHubby and I and were so large and heavy with fruit we had to build “fences” around the bed to hold everything up. Those strawberries look so delicious. We’re thinking about raised beds as well, hoping that they will be somewhat portable if we make them small enough since we’re hoping to move in the next year or two.

I’m jealous. Our strawberries are puny little things and the slugs are all over them. I’m definitely doing some raised beds next year as well. It seems more manageable to me for some reason. Enjoy your berries!

Oh I am jealous! I am hoping when I don’t have a 2 yr old and new baby i can do a garden. All I have right now is herbs, I really want to have a garden next year.

We just planted 25 strawberry plants (in raised boxes (!) last week. I’m curious–how long ago did you plant them? I’m wondering how long it will take for them to really “take off”??
