Lions, Tigers, and Bears… Oh My!

May 2, 2008 > 10 Comments

My sewing time this week has been spent making my son a costume for a play that he is in next week. He has the part of the Lion from the Wizard of Oz. If I hadn’t procrastinated on his costume, I would have purchased a tan sweat suit, but I waited too long. It seems that stores have long since rid their shelves of winter clothing, so we are making do with a pair of brown pajamas.

I am not totally finished with the costume, but I figured I would put it up on the blog anyway. At first I started to hand sew each piece of felt for the mane, but I hate hand sewing and am not very good at it either. So after about and hour, I gave up and just used the machine. It probably would have looked better if I hand stitched it, but since he will be up on a stage no one will be looking that close anyway.

Next week after I finish, I will post pictures of the entire costume. I still need to finish the tail and rework the elastic in the waist of the pants.

I am in looking to upgrade my sewing machine in the next few months. If anyone has any advice or a machine they would recommend I would love to hear from you.

You did a great job! The costume works very well. Brown pajamas was a great idea.

Answering your question about fabric: I only have 2 sources near me. Walmart and an outlet that sells remnants, etc. My Walmart still has fabric, but I’m afraid they will eventually stop selling it.

So cute. You can’t even tell where you hand stitched and what was machine stitched. I bet it will come out exactly as you want when you are done. Great job.

Go to a ‘better’ quilting store and ask if they have any trade ins. That way you can get a really good machine pretty cheap. Plus they usually offer discounts to buyers, along with classes on how to use the darn thing!

I have one 8 year old machine and one 46 year old machine.

I would definately spend the money on a good older machine (ie bernina, etc) than on a new singer that doesn’t come with a decent warranty or classes.

Great job! Love it. That’ll be fun for playing dress-up after the fact too!
