REVIEW: No Trigger – Tycoon

Artist: No Trigger
Album: Tycoon
Genre: Punk/Rock
Label: No Sleep

For this review of No Trigger’s new album to make sense, you need to understand a little more about me than just a faceless music reviewer. My name is Tyler, and I’m turning 20 years old in 8 days from when this was published. Right now I’m taking a break from going to school so that I can work 60 hours a week in order to go back to school. I sit in a cubicle for eight hours a day, then for the next four I troubleshoot computers …

REVIEW: Ashland High – Geronimo

Artist: Ashland High
Album: Geronimo
Genre: Electro/pop
Label: (None)

The debut album from Trace Cyrus’ new musical project is a polarising work. Cyrus actually shows some unexpected potential for the electro-pop genre, distancing himself from the Metro Station (RIP) past which highlighted a flair for disposable, glossy chart tunes but hardly any real musical merit. Information on this project online is sparse, which is a shame as it’s nowhere near the lacklustre rehash we judgmental types might have expected. Indeed, there’s a lot of very catchy and likeable tunes on Geronimo. There are just as many unconvincing disasters loitering starkly …

MOVIE REVIEW: Rampart

Film: Rampart
Starring: Woody Harrelson
Directed by: Oren Moverman

Giving his best performance in years, Woody Harrelson shines in the gritty L.A. noir Rampart, but even his best efforts are not enough to keep this often tedious story afloat.

Set in 1999 Los Angeles, Rampart follows veteran police officer Dave Brown (Harrelson) and his, to say the least, unique approach to police work. He’s hot-headed, more than a bit racist, and willing to do whatever it takes to make sure he survives the jungle of the city as his lifetime of misdoings slowly begins to catch up to him, …

Punch Brothers

REVIEW: Punch Brothers – Who’s Feeling Young Now?

Artist: Punch Brothers
Album: Who’s Feeling Young Now?
Genre: Progressive/bluegrass/classical/acoustic
Label: Nonesuch Records

I remember writing a line in a review before in which I referred to my musical world of “rock meets metal meets Mozart.†Well, the latter third of that triumvirate is so, so incredibly pleased with this album and band. Yes, I’m sorry to say I was unfamiliar with Punch Brothers before today. These are the classics, embraced for a new generation, in the most divinely loving and refreshing and beautiful way. The music is so effortless it’s magical, and there’s an understated class and mastery that …

kill paradise

REVIEW: Kill Paradise – The Glitch

Artist: Kill Paradise
Album: The Glitch
Genre: Synth-pop/electro
Label: BreakSilence Recordings

Kill Paradise mix elements of pop-punk, synth-pop, and electro in this colourful release. It’s a sparky blending of genres that manages to be mostly interesting, though one is left with a distinct lack of impression in its wake. For all its fun and frolics, it feels insubstantial, like a great pile of experiments with no real purpose at their core. But it is enjoyable, light-hearted listening, music that does its best to enlighten your day with something kooky.…

SINGLE REVIEW: Nicki Minaj – Starships

Artist: Nicki Minaj
Song: Starships
Album: Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded
Label: Cash Money/Young Money

Released on Valentine’s Day, “Starships” is the official lead single for Nicki Minaj’s forthcoming Sophomore effort, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. The song strays from the path of early album leaks like “Stupid Hoe” and “Roman In Moscow” by focusing on the dance-pop side of Minaj’s personality, which is a smart marketing move given the mixed reactions to her recent Grammy performance. For those of you who have yet to hear the song, click through now to get a taste …

Review: My Ticket Home – To Create a Cure

Artist: My Ticket Home
Album: To Create a Cure
Genre: Hardcore/Screamo
Label: Rise Records

For their first official release, My Ticket Home have constructed To Create a Cure. The album is an all to familiar blend of; guttural and clean vocals, an explosive rhythm section and thrashing guitars. However, despite the album’s feel of old-hat the five-piece have managed to craft several moments, for better or for worse, worth noting.…

SINGLE REVIEW: Katy Perry – Part Of Me

Artist: Katy Perry
Song: Part Of Me
Album: Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection
Label: Capitol

Yesterday, Katy Perry followed an underwhelming Grammy performance with the release of her latest single, “Part Of Me.” Considering the amount of effort Perry and her label have put into finding the golden sixth #1, the UTG staff eagerly tuned in to hear what the queen of “California Girls” had to offer. For anyone who missed the premiere, here is the lyric video for “Part Of Me.”…

ALBUM STREAM: Real Friends – Everyone That Dragged You Here

We talk about it all the time, but it truly is a rare moment when you discover a band that makes you stop what you are doing and, for at least a moment, really listen to the music they have created. These are the bands that you cannot help sharing with everyone you know, the ones that you “Like” on Facebook out of free will, and are willing to spend an extra $20 to see in the city a bit farther away.

Chicago’s Real Friends are that band.

Three weeks ago, Real Friends quietly released their new EP Everyone That
