Australian Virtual Console Releases : August 3rd, 2007

August 3rd, 2007 by perry

The TurboGrafx-16 avalanche continues !

This week the Australian Wii Shop got a bunch of new TurboGrafx-16 titles, and a few Sega Megadrive games thrown in for good measure.

Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention (Sega Megadrive) is a tactical RPG with turn based gameplay. If you are into RPGs, watch the video to get a feel for how it plays … I generally avoid RPGs like the plague, but this sort of reminds me of Rogue, which I really enjoy, so I may be enticed to try it out on a rainy day.

Blazing Lazers (TurboGrafx-16) a pretty looking vertical scrolling shooter. I might get this to play instead of Super Star Soldier, which is cool, but too hard for me to make any serious progress.

Dead Moon (TurboGrafx-16) … does the TurboGrafx have the highest ratio of sidescrolling/vertical shooters of any console ever ? Probably. I like shooters, but which to choose ? I only have cash and time for one or two. Galaga ‘90 (TG-16) is slated to be released this month, and while not strictly a scrolling shooter, I think I’ll wait for that.

J.J. & Jeff (TurboGrafx-16) looks awful (it’s a Japanese TV spinoff). While I haven’t played it, so I shouldn’t judge a game by it’s video, it looks possibly worse than the very ordinary Mario-wannabe for the Atari 7800, Scrapyard Dog.

Shinobi III : Return of the Ninja Master (Sega Megadrive) a fast sidescrolling hack-n-slash ninja game.

Ninja Spirit (TurboGrafx-16) is in a similar vein to Shinobi, but my gut feeling is that Shinobi is probably better.

World Sports Competition (TurboGrafx-16) is along the lines of Summer Games or California Games. Events are track & field, swimming, shooting, rowing and archery. Limber up you thumbs … they’re going to do some serious tapping.

Dynamite Headdy (Sega Megadrive) a platformer where “you play as the star puppet Headdy who can attack his enemies by shooting his detachable head at them”. I’m sold on this one just by that description alone :) . The colours in this game are seriously bright, and I suspect I’d feel ill after a few hours play … but I’m willing to risk it.

The other PAL region, Europe, got the Breakout-clone Drop Off (TG-16) this week, but Australia missed out on this one, at least for the moment.
