This weeks releases to the Australian Virtual Console shop: Psychosis from Turbografx-16 and Super Turrican from the Super Nintendo.
Super Turrican (SNES)
Which came first … Metroid, Megaman, Contra or Turrican ? Someone’s been heavily inspired by someone else. The variety of weapons, powerups and special abilities in Super Turrican looks kinda nice.
While researching Turrican, I found this great Turrican-inspired “remake” .. Hurrican. Yeh, I know, I know .. this is a Wii blog, and I’m plugging a freeware PC game (runs on Windows, and Linux under Wine). But seriously, check it out if you like platform shooters … it’s really slick.

It’s just a video, not a playable game … but what I love about this is how it shows despite the Wii version having better graphics, sound and even a smattering of motion and pointer controls, the core gameplay mechanic is still there in the hypothetical SNES version. It still feels like Super Mario Galaxy, even if it’s only 2D.

There were two NES releases this week on the Australian Virtual Console shop: Adventure Island and Street Gangs (aka River City Ransom in North America and Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari in Japan). Damn, I can’t wait for WiiWare to launch here … it’s slated to happen in May by all reports. I’m saving my Wii Points till then, particularly if Virtual Console keeps churning out this kind of dross week in, week out.

You heard right … C64 games are coming to Virtual Console.
The Commadore 64 wasn’t exactly known as the pinnacle of retro gaming, but there have got to be a few decent titles in amongst the dross. I hope they are super cheap.
