Ellen & Julian’s wedding was the first Jewish wedding I have photographed/attended, and after theirs I hope there are plenty more to come. It was one of the most fun nights of my life… and I was working!

A Jewish wedding day is truly an amazing experience from beginning to end. A perfect mix of ancient tradition and uninhibited fun. Ellen took the time to sit down and teach me not just about what was going to happen, but why. They pulled off a beautifully personal blend of honouring ancient customs, while still making the day their own. It was a (long!) day I’ll never forget.

It all began at the bride’s family home:

Off to Steveston Shipyards for some “first look” portrait time. No official wedding party = lots of cozy couple time.

The B’deken. An intimate ceremony witnessed by the closest family & friends where the Ketubah & civil documents are signed.

Julian places the veil over Ellen’s face, signifying his commitment to clothe and protect his wife.

The wedding ceremony. The Chuppah symbolizes the home that the couple will build together. It’s open on all sides to welcome friends and relatives with unconditional hospitality. The bride circles the groom 7 times to envelop him in her protective care. The number 7, paralleling the 7 days of creation, symbolizes the fact that the couple are about to create their own new world.

(The ceremony was shot in low light with no flash, as requested by the couple, to protect the intimacy of the event)

The Sheva Brachot (or 7 blessings) mark the completion of the wedding ceremony and are recited over a cup of wine. (Now that’s my kind of blessing! wedding Ellen & Julian | Married Delta Hotel Richmond )

The guests enjoy cocktail hour while the lovely couple and I sneak out for a few more portraits. And I’m so glad we did!

Now this is when things get really interesting. The Hora takes the wedding reception to a whole new level of fun.

I love playing photographic name-that-tune when I edit the photos after the wedding. Any guesses? wedding Ellen & Julian | Married Delta Hotel Richmond

I was warned ahead of time that Ellen’s good friend might break out in a ‘sexy dance’ for her at some point in the reception. It was epic.

At midnight we packed up and headed home, but the party was showing no sign of slowing. Always a good sign.

I’m very lucky to have had the opportunity to photograph Joanne & Chris’ wedding. Beautiful day + gorgeous couple + beautiful locations + lots of time for photos = a recipe for success. The real secret, though? We had a lot of fun. What a sweet couple, with a super fun wedding party, and fabulous friends and family surrounding them.

You may remember Tyler & Amy from their engagement shoot at the firehall a few months back. Their January 24th wedding took place 10 years to the day since they first met, when Tyler was the firefighter who showed up to put out Amy’s small cooking accident.

The festivities took place at the gorgeous River Rock Casino in Richmond, and their penthouse was a great spot for a giggly girls morning. I warn you, this post is going to be photo heavy, but I had trouble narrowing it down.

Hair & Makeup were done by the fantastic Jinesa & Nicole from Pamper Me Pretty. www.pampermepretty.com
Coincidentally, I hired Pamper Me Pretty to do hair & makeup at my wedding almost 5 years ago!

The girls were stylish in silver heels, and the clutch was Amy’s grandmother’s.

I’m sorry Cathy, but this moment is just too precious to ignore.

Meanwhile, my lovely & talented assistant Andrea was chillin’ with the boys.

Their confusion in this photo is priceless. “What do we do with these”?!

Had time to grab a few fun shots with the family before the limo arrived. Makes it easy to do family photos in the morning when your bridesmaids are your sisters!

Gotta love window light!

The ceremony took place at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Richmond. www.oursaviour.ca

Papparazzi! The adoring fans of the newlyweds.

I think my favourite thing about being around Amy & Tyler (and their families) is the laughter. No stiff poses for this group!

wedding Tyler & Amy Tie the Knot!

Think they might be related?

Off to the boardwalk with the wedding party for some photo time. One of my favourite shots of the day.

Such a sweet moment.

They were all such troopers even though they were shivering. These poor girls in strapless dresses in January didn’t let a little cold stop them, and had a great time taking some fun photos.

Caught a couple more little moments before we headed off to the reception.

First dance. I love to see this look on a groom’s face.

As a photographer, I get so excited when some sort of crazy group dance breaks out at a wedding, and this crew didn’t let me down. A little Ra Ra Rasputin really gets a crowd going!

I had a fantastic time, guys, and it’s been great getting to know you. I really appreciate being considered more like a new friend than a vendor. Congratulations!

Sidenote: Amy’s sister Cathy has her own rockin’ modern boudoir studio. ( www.boudoirbycathyempey.com ) Check it out!

Okay, so I’ve been a little behind with the posts lately. But here I am getting back on track, with Neeru and Gary’s two day wedding extravaganza. (This was after their 5 days of parties and ceremonies at home). Neeru was happy to introduce me to the world of the Indian wedding, and even assigned her cousin Angela to be my guide throughout the day. I was so blown away by the beauty of the wedding ceremony traditions, and even more thrilled by the awesome party that followed.

Neeru sees herself fully made up for the first time, and can’t believe the change.

The bride looks stunning, being escorted in to the gurdwara by her parents.
wedding Neeru & Garys Wedding Extravaganza

The couple aren’t traditionally supposed to look at each other during the ceremony, but Gary can’t help but sneak a smile at her.

We head over to Minoru Park in Richmond after the ceremony, and can’t resist the gorgeous old willow tree.

And much like myself, these two don’t like to take things too seriously.

Then it was time for day 2, the traditional western white dress/tux, and a rockin’ reception.

We head back out for another photo shoot, but mother nature was not so kind to us this day.

wedding Neeru & Garys Wedding Extravaganza

There were several traditional dance performances to kick off the party.
wedding Neeru & Garys Wedding Extravaganza

Neeru’s bouquet toss was with a break-apart bouquet so everyone would get a rose.
wedding Neeru & Garys Wedding Extravaganza

Let the dancing begin. Gary’s dad is the first on the dance floor, learning some new moves from Neeru’s family.

The bride has one final clothing change to finish off the night.

And this shot just makes me smile.

Thanks for a great time, guys! It was an experience I’ll never forget.
