Most of you read about how ArticleSnatch.com was kicked off of Hostgator hosting because of the database load. As a result we found a clustered hosting environment called Mosso (a RackSpace spin off). Moving things over has of course not been without its hitches but overall I think its been ok.
One of the biggest differences I noticed immediately was that I was unable to install the WP-Cache Plugin for this wordpress blog due to not being able to create Sym links on the mosso cluster. Finally today it dawned on me and I went to work looking into the problems that were involved and what exactly the sym link did in this case.
To Install the WP-Cache on a cluster I did the following:
1. Download the latest version of WP-Cache and unzip it.
2. Upload the files to the wp-cache folder in your wordpress plugins directory
3. Create /wp-content/cache – and make it writeable by the server
4. Modify your wp-config.php file to include define(’WP_CACHE’, true);
5. Copy the wp-cache-config-sample.php and modify it to the settings you want (you won’t get the admin interface to work with this workaround). Save it as wp-cache-config.php and upload it to the wp-content directory on your blog.
6. Upload wp-cache-phase1.php to wp-content directory and rename to advanced-cache.php (this works around the lack of a sym link)
7. Go into your wordpress control panel and activate the plugin.
You should be all set if you need more help with it please refer to the above page about Wp-Cache. We did not make any changes to the operation of the program, we just had to work around the lack of sym links on mosso clusters. You will know if it worked because of the comment that will be entered into the bottom of the page source about WPCache.
Remember if you want to make changes to the settings of the file you just have to edit the wp-cache-config.php to work the way you want it to – because the admin interface for the plugin won’t work – as it checks for a sym link and fails when it does not find one.

According to my experience, I wouldn’t recommend installing all plugins available because the browser will slow down considerably. Try to keep installed plugins between 5-6 at most.
Does wp-cache really improve wordpress performance? In real time?
It has helped a lot for all of the wordpress sites I’ve ever installed it on.
I have installed several wp sites and it had helped so much in the process. Yes, it improve the performance of wordpress.

I used wp-cache once and only once because once I installed it I had reports of people getting 404 page errors. I’m not sure if there is a fix for this but it caused more problems than solutions.

Maybe you should consider moving to a VPS if you keep getting kicked off your shared web hosting provider. Something like article Snatch is resource intensive and should definitely be on atleast a VPS if you are using it a lot.
@review – I’ve never seen a VPS that would handle articlesnatch. It would have to be a combination of them with load balancing like what joyent offers.
Right now it is running on mosso – at a grid.
I installed the plug-in because my wordpress site runs rather slow. I started thinking though, of potential SEO problems that could arise.
Has anyone noticed and traffic increases / deceases from search engines after using this plugin?

OK, So I have used the plugin for a week now and have seen no noticeable drop it traffic. I guess it is safe to assume that there is no negative affect from an seo point of view. Any updates Jason on your site yet?

I’ve heard hostgator was really bad about DB usage. I’m not sure if other hosts are quite so strict or put so many users on one box.
