I just read about this on 5ThrityOne.
Apparently several sites are out there distributing themes for wordpress and joomla with hidden links and other malicious code installed. This is a huge heads up for the wordpress and joomla community to make sure you review the themes before you install them. Additionally make sure you look for other dirty tricks – like links being displayed with the CSS command of display:none. I’ve seen that a lot as well.
The last few themes I have reviewed were totally clean – so I’m not all that worried about this site. But its definitely something to keep in mind for future blog updates.

Yes i find hidden links in a lot of Joomla templates and even in some components. This has caused me to remove EVERY link from templates I use, so even honest authors do not get any credit anymore. sorry but a small group ruined it for the rest …

Ouch! I’ve never realized that some of the themes I used could have exploits in them. Obviously the CSS: none would show up links right? What other exploits could these black hatters implement?
Now I am really afraid because I always pick a lot of free themes out there for my wordpress blogs. I shall appreciate some tips to check that so how to determine that actually?
Do you think the themes developed in the open source arena are less likely to exploit?

Most come across the hidden options in the templates wordpress, although templates for joomla for a lot longer and I think it’s weird. Now a lot of services to identify those options and I think now it’s not a big problem.
