Rocker SIR ELTON JOHN has caused outrage by branding the current black music scene “hugely disappointing”.
The 57-year-old ROCKET MAN has turned his vitriol on R+B, hip-hop and soul music, because he believes contemporary US stars have ruined the musical legacy of their black predecessors. (more…)
Before some of you conclude that he is a racist, think about what he is saying here for a moment. The only thing that I would add to what he is saying here is that todays music in general has greatly deteriorated.
The other day I was talking with a friend of mine and we were talking about why we do not like listening to top 40 radio stations. Much of the music of today sounds very identical with very little originality. Artists of today do not come close to groups like Earth, Wind, and Fire, Stevie Wonder, Isley Brothers, etc.
What is scary is that I remember my parents saying the same thing. We’re gettin’ old y’all

I wonder if Sir Elton was saying all of this when Mary J. jacked his Benny and the Jets beat for her song deep inside. Then again wasn’t Sir Elton was playing the piano in the video.

I’m 23 years old and I love all black music, old and new. However, I can’t dismiss the fact that my generation is hip-hop no matter what color my skin is. My point is that Hip-Hop is me, and like a child of old school black music it has grown into its own. So I can’t except the notion that hip-hop has ruined black musical legacy just because a musical legend says so. Hip hop gave US a voice from its inception. I think that some if it sucks now, but some of everything sucks. It will be what we left behind. We shouldn’t diss it.
