On the Fly
Allen Brown and I met several years ago at the Hollifield railroad crossing as I headed home from work on a spring afternoon. Allen had just finished a day of fly fishing the Little Patapsco River for stocked rainbow. I had developed an interest in saltwater fly-fishing at the time, and wanted to consult with someone who knew proper casting techniques and choice of fly patterns…what a coincidence. I couldn’t help but notice Allen’s Titley hat and the two 1 to 11/4 pound rainbow trout he had carried along his waist. If the hat wasn’t proof of experience, the fish convinced me. Allen, a local angler who has fly-fished Maryland ‘s streams, marshlands and tributaries introduced me to the art of fly fishing. Eager to share information, Allen became a resource guide for me as I ventured into the world of fly-fishing. Although we kept in contact for years, it was hard to believe we never found the chance to accompany each other on a fishing trip. Well that day had finally come.
