¡SÃÂÂ, Se Puede!: The illegal remix
on April 10th, 2006 at 4:43 amUpdate 1: “A Sept. 27, 2001, Zogby poll showed that 70 percent of Hispanics said a dramatic increase in border enforcement is needed. The 2001 Zogby poll showed a majority of Hispanics thought an amnesty for illegal Mexican immigrants was a bad idea. A March 2000 Wall Street Journal poll I showed three times as many Hispanics viewed immigration as “too open” as “too closed.” . . . (more from “Many Hispanics support Tancredo”)
More updates are being added at the bottom of this post.
It never ceases to amaze me when people (regardless of culture and issue) can be so willingly ignorant when it comes to history. Take for example the usage of the phrase “¡SÃÂÂ, Se Puede!”. This was coined by the founder of the National Farm Workers Association, Cesar Chavez in response to the mistreatment of LEGAL Mexican farm workers in this country. Here is something you will not hear at any of the now highly-publicized protests for ILLEGAL immigrant rights:
In 1969, Chávez and members of the UFW marched through the Imperial and Coachella Valley to the border of Mexico to protest growers’ use of illegal aliens as temporary replacement workers during a strike. Joining him on the march were both a Reverend Ralph Abernathy and a U.S. Senator Walter Mondale. Chávez and the UFW would often report suspected illegal aliens who served as temporary replacement workers as well as who refused to unionize to the INS. (more…)
Myth: All Hispanics side with those who enter this country illegally.
False! As a resident in Southern California, I can tell you that there are many Hispanics here that do not agree with this sense of entitlement by illegal immigrants. Sadly, for those of Hispanic origin that disagree with these protests, many of them have to keep their opinions on the DL in fear of being perceived as a sellout (sounds familiar?). Check this out:
Prop. 200 had Hispanic support
By Lourdes Medrano and Enric Volante
Arizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 11.04.2004ÂÂÂ
“Hispanic voters appear to have given a narrow majority of support to Proposition 200 in a state where voters overall easily passed the controversial measure in 11 of 15 counties.
The measure failed by the widest margin – 61 percent to 39 percent – in the border county of Santa Cruz, where the 2000 census found Hispanics made up 76 percent of voting-age residents. Yet it passed in heavily Hispanic Yuma County with 65 percent of the vote. However, it is unclear how many of those Hispanic residents are registered voters who went to the polls.
An Associated Press exit poll of 1,781 voters found that the margin of support for Proposition 200 was higher among families that earned less than $50,000 last year and among voters who were not college graduates (Black Informant: So we can rule out making this a “class” issue)…”
(And what is Prop. 200?)
“Proposition 200 requires proof of citizenship when registering to vote and evidence of legal residency when applying for some government benefits. It also could mean jail time for state workers who don’t report illegal immigrants who seek benefits. It passed with 56 percent of the vote, losing only in Pima, Greenlee, Coconino and Santa Cruz counties.” (more…)
Mind you, this is similar to what was being proposed in Georgia recently except opponents (including many black activists) were framing this as a form of racism (see article).
There is plenty more to this issue that I will try to cover tomorrow. In the meantime, please continue to voice your opinion on this issue by commenting.
Update 2: “In 2003, according to the Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles, 57,600 cars were stolen in Phoenix. It is now the car-jacking capital of the world. Most were SUV’s and pickup trucks. At a conservative average of $15,000.00 per vehicle, owner losses exceeded $864 million. Insurance companies in the state suffered incredible claims from policyholders.
Arizona is the temporary home of 500,000 illegal aliens. They cost Arizona taxpayers over $1 billion annually in services for schools, medical care, welfare anchor babies, loss of tax base and prisons. Illegals use those vehicles for smuggling more people and drugs from around the world into our country. When the vehicles are recovered, they are smashed-up wrecks in the desert. If not found, they have new owners south of the border as thieves drive the cars through the desert and into Mexico as easily as you drive your kids to soccer practice.
Illegal aliens displaced American workers at a cost in excess of $133 billion dollars last year according to Harvard Professor George Borjas. American citizens: College and high school kids cannot find a summer job in yard care, landscape, fast food or service jobs. Why? Illegal aliens work them at a third the wage and often, under the table.” (a whole lot more found at this link)ÂÂÂ
