Now I promised myself that I would do no more writing on Tookie, but the following comments from around the web regarding yesterday’s funeral were just too much for me to handle by myself…
Farrakhan compared Williams to Jesus, saying both had been betrayed by false witnesses and sent to their death after politicians failed to intervene. He called Williams, “the patron saint for all those struggling in the gang life.”
“If you feed on the words of brother Stan, he will come closer to you and you will not only see the redemption of Brother Stan, but you will be part of his redemption,” Farrakhan said.
Ending up in San Quentin with a couple of needles in my arm doesn’t sound like redemption to me
“Tookie Williams is dead. We are not safer. We are not more secure. We are not more humane.” Jackson said. “The state does not have the moral authority…to kill.”
Need I say which Jackson said this?
I wonder if the state has the moral authority…to kill when the guilty is a unrepentant white supremacist?
“It’s nine-fifteen on twelve-thirteen and another black king will be taken from the scene,” Snoop Dogg told mourners, reciting a poem about the execution. The line “I don’t believe Stan did it” drew wild applause in the parking lot.
A black king?
“I’m here to pay my respects to humanity, and that goes to Tookie and everyone else they do in. … What if it was your son?” Birdsong said. “He’s no different from any other human being. We all made mistakes.”
Okay, I have to break this one up:
I’m here to pay my respects to humanity
Did you pay those same respects to the real victims?
“He’s no different from any other human being.
I’ll say he is at least a 4 body count different than me and most people I know.
We all made mistakes
Yeah, but killin’ ain’t one of them.
In a phone message, Bruce Gordon, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, told the crowd his group would rededicate itself to Williams’ message warning of the dangers of gangs.
I thought they already did that.
