Bernie the Bengal?

It was nine (10?) years ago that Randy Smith almost landed Bernie Williams in a trade with the Yankees. I had zero confidence in what Smith was doing as the Tigers‘ general manager/dismantler but I loved the idea of that trade. Bernie is one of my favorite major leaguers.

And now, though it’s a decade later, Bernie appears to be available.
At 38, he’s the same age as Gary Sheffield (and yours truly) and doesn’t have a lot of big-league time left. Still, I’d love to have him as a left-handed DH (though he’s a switch hitter) and sometime-outfielder to spell Curtis Granderson in center.

What do you think?

I don’t think he’s really interested in going elsewhere or it wouldn’t have come this far with the Yankees. I’m sure he’s known this was coming for some time.

I think the Tigers are fine in centerfield anyway. Assuming Granderson stays healthy he will just take most of the load again this year and Clevlen is likely to make some appearances as well to back him up later in the season.

I don’t think it would be a bad move to have Bernie here but I don’t think he’s really needed.

Good points. Eric. I’m just hung up on the lack of experienced left-handed bats on this current roster.

I’m still holding out hope for Todd Helton.

In the NY Times, Williams made it sound like he wasn’t interested in playing for anyone else besides the Yankees. He may have already turned down guaranteed offers from other teams, too.
