At Last, The Neifi Question Answered

On my flight to Detroit this morning I decided to watch Justin Verlander’s no-hitter again, this time on my iPod.

(Truth be told, it was a strategic decision. The guy across the aisle clipped, filed and buffed his nails — in stocking feet, no less — while occasionally doing a one-handed “raise-the-roof” motion, presumably to the music piped into his ear buds, from a Palm Pilot.)

While watching the game I had a eureka moment, one that answered the heretofore unanswerable Tigers question of the past two seasons: What was the purpose of acquiring Neifi Perez in 2006?

Answer: To save Verlander’s no-hitter in 2007.

Perez’s diving stab of Gabe Gross’s bullet and the sweet flip to Placido Polanco started a beautiful inning-ending double play in the eighth.

Want to watch the game on your iPod or on your PC? You can still get it from the iTunes Store for a measly $1.99.

I have to admit, I still have Verlander’s no-hitter saved in my DVR. Every once in a while, I fire it up to get a needed baseball fix. As for he who will not be named, that double play was the ONLY positive he brought to the Tigers.

So you came back to Michigan just in time to “enjoy” what may be the coldest night of the winter? You have great timing, Mike…

I watched that game every other day during this offseason just so I could get my “Tigers fix!”
