Good Ninth Inning Comeback
By John Milton in Milton's Musings | 2 comments
It was nice to see that the Tigers did not lie down against J.J. Putz in the 9th inning yesterday. After Ivan Rodriguez struck out, Brandon Inge drew a walk to start the rally. Curtis Granderson singled to move Inge over to third, and Placido Polanco singled to right to bring Inge home. The Tigers then got a run on an infield single by Magglio Ordonez and two runs on a double by Miguel Cabrera.
Todd Jones made things interesting in the bottom of the 9th by giving up a couple of runs, but he got the job done to preserve the victory and get the Tigers a win of the series.Â
This was a game that had loss written on it, as have a few of the 56 games the Tigers have played this season. We need this game to be a momentum shifter to bring the Tigers more run scoring in the series starting tonight in Oakland. Thanks to the recent losses by the White Sox, the Tigers are only 6 games out of first place, and they are not yet out of the race. We’ll see if they are up to making the effort to gain some ground.

I wonder if the Tigers might just be getting their 2nd-half-flop over with in the 1st half this year. The last couple of years, even the World Series year, they went into a 2nd half nose dive. So I’m hoping that they’re simply getting this out of the way early. The fact that they are still hanging around in the division is a good sign. If they can hold on until the All Star break, and then kick on the afterburners, then they may just see the post-season.
Well, it’s a nice thought anyway.

Great point. Wouldn’t it be something if the Tigers rally for a second-half surge? Or a pre-All Star Game surge continuing on into a second-half surge? Keep the optimism!
