SI Likes an Eckstein-to-Tigers Deal

SI’s John Donovan would like to see 10 trades made this week. Here’s one he’d like the Tigers to make:

David Eckstein (Blue Jays) to the Tigers

Eckstein gets pounded on by the stats-minded community. His numbers indicate that he’s not even an average big-league shortstop. Still, he’d be better than Edgar Renteria, he’s cheap, he’s been on World Series winners and he’s on a short contract. Plus the Tigers could use a little “scrappiness.”

I’d have no problem with this. Before the Reneteria trade went down, I thought the Tigers should’ve signed Eckstein to a one-year deal as a stop gap.

I too would be fine with this. Who are you tradig to get him? I certainly wouldn’t want to give up much. And what becomes of Edgar once Eck comes to town?

Speaking of old veterans on the way out, why does Sheff continue to find his way into the lineup? Enough’s enough. If Leyland believes he won’t behave himself as a bench player, then sever ties and move on.

Be careful what you wish for, Mike. You know what this would mean. Column after column praising Eckstein for his “grit” and “hustle,” ignoring the fact he’s an average shortstop.

In my mind, between Renteria and Eckstein, it’s 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. I’d rather play Santiago more often than trade prospects for an Eckstein.

Seeing how badly Renteria turned out, they would have been better off getting Eckstein before the season because he would have come a lot cheaper. At this point though, I don’t really see the benefit of acquiring Eckstein. Neither one is very good.

I agree, Big Al, that Santiago is not a bad option at short. In fact, I’d be fine handing him the keys and sending Edgar on his way.

Of course, nothing wrong with Renteria-for-Eckstein straight up, right?

If Edgar moves, it’ll be to the National League, don’t you think?

Edgar’s next stop is definitely the NL. He’s been an unmitigated flop during his two cameos in the AL.

And yes, Eck for Renteria straight up would be heaven sent. I don’t think the Blue Jays’ braintrust is that dimwitted, however.
