Why do we still use business cards?

October 21st, 2008

I always have this pile of business cards that I end up throwing away every few months. I meet people at meetings and conferences, scan their cards into my address book with my IRIS  card scanner, and then I forever have their information in digital format. I do not need to keep a pile of business cards that are impossible to organize and a waste of space stashed in my desk drawers and filing cabinets.

Why do we not have a digital business card ?

Why can’t we store our business card/personal contact info in our mobile devices and quickly swap this info with anyone else carrying a mobile device? Is it that difficult to do? I don’t think so. You would just need a bluetooth or wi-fi connection and it’s done. We already have a standard address book format (vcard). Right?

Why does this product not exist or I am unaware of it? BTW - not talking about being able to do this via palm infrared, or nokia to nokia, I mean standard among all devices.

Glad I met Robin

October 16th, 2008

IMG_0007

This is Robin, a person I wish everyone could meet. I met her on my flight home from San Francisco. It was the best conversation I’ve ever had on an airplane with a complete stranger, and I got off the plane feeling like I’d just been cured of some disease - 100% REFRESHING.

She manages a business, a family, finds time to do things she enjoys, and most importantly does it all with an amazingly positive attitude that spreads like a fever.  She is accomplished in every since of the word.

But what is most inspiring is that Robin beat cancer. Even through the roughest of times she held onto her optimism and determination and believes that’s why she’s still here today.

I feel guilty for worrying about trivial things in my life that mean nothing. Who cares? Life is short and you go around once. Thanks Robin for the reminder ;)

financial turmoil - good advice

October 10th, 2008

The headlines are only stirring up unnecessary anxiety and depression (I wonder how George Bush deals with it?) - probably takes this advice….

“Put wax in your ears. People are more afraid of flying than driving because the press does not report car accidents. I never watch the news. Only listen to news you get in a social setting, the things people talk about. Our brains cannot deal with the overload of information. Having a lot of data is not good for anyone trying to make a decision.”

me and the housing crisis

September 23rd, 2008

front1.jpg

The meltdown of the U.S. financial markets was jump started by several factors. The housing bubble, American consumers overspending, trade deficit and on the story goes…

I put my 4 year old house on the market this summer and was able to experience the housing bubble burst with my own eyes.   We listed the house on the market in June, which was the worst possible time to list a house. In my neighborhood alone there were 18 homes on the market!! From June on the market spiraled down, foreclosures in our area spiked, and not a single house was moving. People were forced to drop prices to ridiculous lows (10-20% and more…) just to compete. Just to be able to dump their houses! And this was in a so called “stable market,” Columbus, Ohio, where home values have been relatively constant during both the boom and sluggish times. I cannot imagine selling a house in NY, Florida, or California during this time. Owners are losing over 50% of the value!

I decided to lease my house vs. selling and taking the hit. Actually it was more the fact that I believed I wouldn’t be able to sell vs. anything else. Thanks to Craigslist, and 99% of pure luck and serendipity I was able to find the PERFECT tenants for my house and duck out of this crisis at least for the next year. It took some time and I received several calls but many of them were just “not a fit,” and I didn’t trust leasing to them after the horror stories I’ve heard about bad tenants.

So, thank you to Warren P for finding me a the right time and also being the perfect tenants we were looking for. (Warren BTW is in the same position as me, and has leased his house too :) ) I only hope that the market turns around after the election and people are at least able to sell their homes next year. I believe it will take longer, at least 18-24months before it fully stabilizes. We’ll see if I can hang on that long……..

Want to live on the ocean?

It’s called seasteading. Only $100M for a pototype - it can be done!

Just a few concerns about …umm. safety and order on a concrete island absent of government?   Don’t think Walt Disney covered that one is his Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow (EPCOT) ;)

Maybe these would make for better tourist spots than permanent living…just a thought

Google infuence vs. domination

September 5th, 2008

There is speculation that Google’s new Chrome browser is the Microsoft IE killer, or will slowly be the demise of Firefox. It’s pretty much been the headline news in the tech world this week.

Here’s some food for thought. Google only has one profitable product, and that’s adsense.  They exist for the sole purpose of serving ads anywhere they can, websites, mobile devices, inside applications etc.

Most of Google’s recent major product releases are only meant to influence existing players to further develop their technology to support Google’s intentions to rule the world  :) Google is more concerned about influencing incumbents in their favor vs. being a dominant product line. A few examples… ?

The telecom giants feared that google would buy spectrum and begin offering affordable mobile voice and data plans, stealing customers by offering open content and devices. Result - At&t and Verizon opened their networks. Influence.
The release of Google’s Mobile OS, Android, forced Symbian (the dominate open mobile OS in the world) to declare they are going open source. Influence.
The Cloud Computing platform appengine is designed for web developers to quickly launch applications in the cloud. There is speculation that the ultimate strategy is for appengine developers to bring the apps easily to the desktops, creating a seamless desktop/web experience. Microsoft and Adobe have hurried to release the next version of Silverlight & AIR, and are pursuing cloud platforms. Ads on the desktop and web - that’s double the footprint! ;) Influence.

I’m just saying……..

Confused on politics

August 23rd, 2008

I understand politics about 10%, which is very sad. But with a system so confusing for something as simple as electing then next president can you blame me?

If you want to try to understand how the electoral college votes for the next president please read this.

Just remember, your vote is a “suggestion” for the elector. ;)

If you do live in a swing state  please vote! No guarantees - but maybe your suggestions will have an impact.

Meetings are toxic

August 20th, 2008

Aside from customer and partner meetings, I have to agree the majority of meetings are a waste of time……..quoting 37signals

Don’t have meetings

Do you really need a meeting? Meetings usually arise when a concept isn’t clear enough. Instead of resorting to a meeting, try to simplify the concept so you can discuss it quickly via email or im or Campfire. The goal is to avoid meetings. Every minute you avoid spending in a meeting is a minute you can get real work done instead.

There’s nothing more toxic to productivity than a meeting. Here’s a few reasons why:

They break your work day into small, incoherent pieces that disrupt your natural workflow They’re usually about words and abstract concepts, not real things (like a piece of code or some interface design) They usually convey an abysmally small amount of information per minute They often contain at least one moron that inevitably gets his turn to waste everyone’s time with nonsense They drift off-subject easier than a Chicago cab in heavy snow They frequently have agendas so vague nobody is really sure what they are about They require thorough preparation that people rarely do anyway

For those times when you absolutely must have a meeting (this should be a rare event), stick to these simple rules:

Set a 30 minute timer. When it rings, meeting’s over. Period. Invite as few people as possible. Never have a meeting without a clear agenda.

Twitter Talk at BarCamp Chicago

August 17th, 2008

Barcamp Chicago came together nicely this weekend. Thanks to all of the sponsors for making the event possible. Below are some entertaining videos I shot on qik. The topic was twitter and it gets more entertaining the more you watch - thx to Harper Reed and Ron May.

The reason for two videos is because my phone crashed mid-stream…not sure the exact reason but I had to do a hard reset to fix it….much fun :)

I have no sense of direction. It’s probably an undiagnosed disorder (i.e. ADD, ADHD etc…) Anyway,  Google & Nokia MAPS made life easier, then came my TomTom along with GPS on my phone,  life got even easier. Now, I’m also using Google Transit for all my public transportation needs. It’s been around awhile but now I’m actually using it and it’s great, especially getting around chicago
