I’ve been using Modest for a few weeks now and it’s gotten progressively better and more stable with each incremental release. While it’s still in beta, anyone can give it a try now. The official site is live and I suggest you check it out if you’ve been seeking a more substantial email option on your OS2008 enabled tablet.
I’ve got my Gmail account setup with IMAP and my own personal identity rather than @gmail.com which works as you would expect any modern email client to work. The main issue which I believe will be resolved as it reaches release (non-beta) status is that Modest does not currently give you the option to replace the default email client for mail duty so unless it’s open when you click a mailto-link or choose to send via email, the other app will open. That said, I’ve had it working in the background on my N800 (and previously the N810 before I sent it back) with great success. Connections over Bluetooth DUN and wifi work quite well.
Some notes from the announcement on Maemo.org:
Some highlights:
the basics: POP/IMAP/SMTP (normal/secure) MAP folders support, and IMAP-IDLE (”push-email”) easy setup of new accounts send and receive of rich text-emails managing mail with your fingers 100% open-source with a BSD-like license
Some important notes:
modest will *not* replace the official e-mail program it does have the same name/icon in the menus, so don’t get confused! Modest uses English, regardless of your settings Modest works great with Gmail; don’t forget to use ‘user@gmail.com’ as your username, not just ‘user’.

Works fine for me with just my gmail user name no need for user@gmail.com
Only problem I have is inline images in html are not shown using gmail imap
I use Gmail to aggregate my mail and don’t often send as @gmail.com…
I see they actually added an option now in account setup for both POP and IMAP Gmail access which is quite nice.
Hopefully inline images will be an option as we move closer to release, though I’ve become accustomed to not seeing them and appreciate the additional speed I get when connected over bluetooth dun.
Perhaps a silly question, but what does this offer over the stock email client? It looks very similar.
@Rob For starters it works. IMAP support is excellent and the app is far more responsive. It’s still a beta, but will be a way to replace the default app (not delete, but use instead) as I understand it.

It’s been a lot of work. ButModest first beta is finally here. For Chinook/OS2008 users, it’s easily available:
Just curious, but why did you send your n810 back? I’m using os2008 on my n800, but I wouldn’t balk at getting an n810 if my n800 died.
I had to as it was a pre-release proto… The N810 is my preferred device and I am looking forward to getting one again soon.
Thanks for all the effort that has gone into Modest. It is a worthwhile improvement over the standard email client on the N810. I’m mostly using Modest to access my company Microsoft Exchange server (setup to use IMAP protocols) over a secure link, and Modest works very well, giving a good top-level view of all the IMAP folders exposed from Exchange.
I’m looking forward to a later version which can replace the current N810 email client.
Thanks again for all the effort, Simon.
I have about 7000 emails in one of my labors and I’m wondering… is there anyway to have it not refresh the entire list? its kind of annoying to have to wait a few minutes before all your email shows up.. especially since its from the bottom up… i might be asking to much w/ that amount of mail though. Would pop make any difference or does it still have to load the headers into the program?
absolutely … you can set the number of messages that download in your account settings.
I tried that, but for some reason it doesnt stick with the subfolder(labels) for gmail. I’m using imap… any input anyone?
wonderfull app, but how to make it by default mail app please?
best regards
Once it is out of beta, we should be able to replace the existing client with Modest
