There must be a reason why this is disabled by default. Privacy implications? Some spammers track valid email addresses by generating unique image URLs and waiting for HTTP requests when the mail client tries to load them.

this settings is not simply off, but actually hidden. i can’t figure out why it’s not a user preference particularly in the release version of the client. knowing you are being tracked is a good reason to leave images off, but if you are only getting the html version of a message say from flickr with your daily friend updates, it is totally worthless without images.

i am not seeing any performance issues with mail delivery or loading on edge, 3G or wifi … images only get downloaded when you open a message.

I would like to see this as a proper preference setting.

along with:

1. the ability to change the fonts modest uses
2. the ability to see more than one account without going thru some ridiculous menu selection tricks
3. the ability to filter messages into folders

sadly modest falls short on all usability issues and of course was adopted by nokia as the official email client … why they would do that i have no idea … but it sucks and its sad

I guess for me mobile mail is primarily my inbox to keep tabs on things and I tend to not need access to any other folders. I used to have a much more complicated email configuration with a deep IMAP folder hierarchy but Gmail changed all that for me … since I know I can find anything

Images can take a lot more memory than just text and device running low on memory makes it unrealiable (like on Desktop, Glib/Gtk (and Qt) programs abort if allocation fails). If you’re running just e-mail with large mailbox(es), it’s not a problem. If you have also browser running and maybe maemo mapper, well…
