Incidentally, something important that Nokia hasn’t really publicised:

Registering for the Nokia Chat service gets you a Nokia Account user name (in the @ovi.com form) which is Nokia’s future unified login. If you register now, you will eventually be able to use the same username and password to access any of Nokia’s online services including Ovi Share, Ovi Files, Maps, Music, N-Gage and other upcoming stuff.

Krisse - Good call! I’ve been matching up my logins as I’ve been going, but you are right the Ovi sign in will let you connect all the services under one username - finally!

The one thing I don’t understand: AFAIK, it’s XMPP based… so why do I need yet another account for it at ovi? What’s the point of using a standars-compliant service if you can’t just use the client with any server you want?

And is it true that my contacts (who all use jabber-based services) would need to sign up for a Nokia.account, too? Even though afterwards I could theoretically chat with them using both my and their other (non-nokia) acounts?

It’s all very confusing. (And the video clip on their site is - hilarious.)

I hear you on the server end and have discussed that a few times as well. I think Nokia Chat will integrate with some other future things … Because it’s jabber though you can add other buddies from xmpp services like Gtalk for example. Works fine for me on the phone. I’ve added a few Gtalk buddies and the interoperability works fine, though you don’t get any of the extra features like location sharing, but chatting works just fine.

ossi1967, they’re no doubt using their own (closed) stuff on top of XMPP.

I’m willing to bet that the location stuff is going to be totally closed, as an example. This would explain why they want to keep the maemo location stack closed as well…

I *really* have to try this as soon as i get home again (i dont have my 6110 navigator with me), I’m still a bit confused… - I wouldn’t mind to to sign up at ovi.com for whatever reason, but I don’t really want to harass all my (jabber-)contacts telling them yet another JID they should add to their roasters.

This can only work if i can use it in a way so my contacts see my good old jabber-id (maybe by having ovi register for me at my jabber server).

I also don’t see why the location info (the most promising feature) doesnt use some kind of proposed Jabber extension, like XEP-0080. (Apparently, it doesn’t at the moment). If it would, one could at least hope for compatibility with desktop clients in the future.
