Park, Alieen Gertrude

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Gertie on Saturday, November 27, 2004 after a long and rich life of 91 years.

In her life Gertie shared a passion with Cliff – a love of their family. This love provided a foundation for her continued support and encouragement of the life pursuits of her children and grandchildren. In turn, she was clearly loved as a radiant light by her family and friends. Her life was founded on morals, education and hard work. In a time of much talk of ethics and values, she lived hers. Gertie arrived in Calgary from her home in Medicine Hat in 1950 with Cliff and her young family. She participated in her children’s and grandchildren’s activities as a knowledgeable enthusiast. She enjoyed sports throughout her life and remained active in her Aquasize classes until her eighty sixth year. Gertie was a long time member of The United Church of Canada and a member of the Eastern Star. One of her greatest joys lay in a brief career in the women’s fashion industry in Calgary. Gertie was a dependable and delightful friend and mother. On reflection her life had a surprising reach. She was always ready to lend a hand of unconditional assistance and emotional solace. No family had a kinder friend. She will be sorely missed. The family would like to thank the staff at the Carewest Sarcee Nursing Home for the thoughtful care provided to her during the last three years.

Gertie is survived by and lovingly remembered by her four children, Sandy (Pam), Terry, Rick (Heather) and Peggy Lyon (Bruce); her ten grandchildren, Brad (Brandy), Stephen (Leanne), Doug, Suzanne, Scott Lyon, Robert Lyon, James Lyon, Carolyn Lyon, Steven Waters (Joceylyn) and Michelle Mickleborough (Andrew). Recently, Gertie was blessed with arrival of two great-grandchildren, Brady Park and Emma Mickleborough. She is also survived by her two sisters-in-law, Joyce McArthur and Lillian McArthur as well as many nieces and nephews. Gertie was predeceased by Cliff, her beloved husband of fifty-eight years, in 1997, her grandson, Matthew Lyon and by her five brothers, Jim, George, Gordon, Maurice and Malcolm.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Thursday, December 2, 2004, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at St. Matthew’s United Church (2039 – 26A Street S.W.) on Friday, December 3, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Woodlock, Yvonne Lois

Woodlock, Yvonne Lois

It is with great sadness that Bonnie’s family announces her passing on November 29, 2004 at 1:30 in the afternoon, in the presence of her family, at the wonderful AgapÚ Manor (Hospice). Bonnie’s passing was after a long and courageous battle with leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

Beloved wife and best friend of Michael for forty-four years and cherished mother to Carole (Peter Byrne) of Rochester, NY, Debi (Dennis Brown) of Richmond Hill, ON, Kelly (Stuart Chan) of Calgary, AB, and John (Jordan Bowie) of Ottawa, ON. Bonnie’s love for her husband and children was met only by her immense love for her grandchildren, Cody, Chelsea and Scot Brown, Brendan Byrne and Maya Chan. Our Mom was by far the strongest and most inspirational mother any child or grandchild could wish for in a lifetime.

Bonnie was born and raised in Calgary by her single mom, Dorothy Smith. After being married at a very young age, Bonnie and Mike raised four children and did everything possible so she could be at home with her kids until they were all settled in school. Once the kids were all in school, she then embarked on a career in addition to the one she had in the home. Bonnie worked in the healthcare industry, in sales, for twenty very successful years. The greatest joys from Bonnie’s career were the people and patients she encountered and the challenges they faced together to make a difference in the health care industry.

Bonnie is also survived by her brother Ian (Stef) Smith of Parksville, BC; and her sisters, Maureen (David) Thomas of Nanaimo, BC and Sandi Smith (Keith Mills) of Calgary; nieces Joanna Smith (Todd Smylski) of Calgary, and Nicola Thomas (Pat Lynch) of Canmore, AB; and great nephew, Jason Smith; as well as the families of her Aunts and Uncles (George and Vonnie Sutherland, Harry and Irene Knight, and Lois Larue) were also very much a loved presence in her life. Bonnie was predeceased by her father, Ian R. Smith in 1990; grandson Max Chan in 2001; and her mother Dorothy E. Smith in 2003.

A Celebration of Bonnie’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.) on Saturday, December 4, 2004 at 3:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Sarcoma Research Account, Attention: Ann Pelletier, Donations Clerk 1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: (403) 944-2433. A special thanks to the homecare nurses and the angels from the AgapÚ Manor that took such good care of our mom.

Dyck, Denis Wallace

Sadly, we announce the passing of our kind, generous, loving, husband, father and friend, Denis Wallace Dyck. He passed away as the sun was rising on November 29, 2004 at the Foothills Medical Centre. Denis had a strong will and battled his heart condition with determination for 31 years.

Denis was born on the family farm in Laird, SK on February 13, 1932. He was the prominent founder of Dyck Insurance, an independent insurance brokerage since 1962. His business was his pride and joy. Denis was a determined man who always persevered. He was very grateful to his first client and to the many valued clients his company continues to service today. He was an entrepreneur who loved the challenge and adventure of trying something new and was not afraid to take a risk. He said to many that “you can do whatever you want if you are willing to work hard.” Previously, he spent some time with London Life Insurance and the RCMP and has since been involved with the RCMP veterans association. Always a community man, he was involved with many other organizations. Denis also had a love of travel and adventure and could be at one moment heading out to the farm, and the next to the Great Wall of China. His greatest love was his family and one of his last adventures was a family vacation in September of 2004. He worked hard at whatever project was at hand. Denis had a passion for renovating, the last of which was nearly completed at the time of his passing.
