Ed Heck, beloved and cherished husband of Joyce Heck of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at the age of 69 years.

Besides his loving wife, Ed is survived by eight children and their spouses, Arlee Robbins, Tina and Richard Lacasse, Dean Heck, Deanna and Gary Reeder, Duane Heck, Joy and Bill Duncan, Theresa and Karsten Nielsen and Steven Lord; nine grandchildren, Jamie, Shelby, Jordan, Julian, Sarah, Jennifer, Jessica, Tena and Christian and their families; five great-grandchildren, Madison, Levi, Matthew, Jonathon and Ayden. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses, Katherine Lalonde, Margaret Sherger, Theresa and Martin Scherger, Jack and Rena Heck, Theresa Heck as well as Clarence Kurtz and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Frances and John Heck, brother Henry Heck and sister Donna Kurtz.

SCHMEECKLE – Duane Allan

April 3, 1920 – March 31, 2010

Duane Allan Schmeeckle passed away peacefully at the Chinook Hospice in Calgary, Alberta, on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, in his 90th year.

Duane was born on April 3, 1920, in Eustis, Nebraska, and spent his childhood years in New Raymer, Colorado and Cozad, Nebraska. After high school, Duane attended the University of Nebraska before joining the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in June, 1942, serving in Europe until the end of World War II. Duane completed his B.Sc. (Mechanical Engineering) in 1947 and joined Shell Oil. He worked in the U.S. Gulf Coast area and eventually relocated with Shell to Alberta, Canada. He married Barbara Sparrow on April 7, 1956, in Calgary, where they raised their six children. Duane pursued a career in private business, founding Petro-Automation Industries in 1957. It evolved into Cantech Corporation, which continued for many years as a national instrumentation and control company based in Calgary. After the sale of Cantech in 1998, he remained active in business with Nextron Corporation, a public company, until 2007.

Duane was an active member of the Rotary Club of Calgary East. He was committed to their service activities, including projects such as Rotary Challenger Park and the Rotary Clock on International Avenue. He also spent many hours volunteering for various community and charitable activities. Duane was an enthusiastic supporter of the International Avenue BRZ, Heritage Park, Telus Science Centre, St. Mary’s University College, and other non-profit groups. He was a member of the Calgary Petroleum Club, the Glencoe Club, the Glencoe Golf & Country Club, the Instrument Society of America and the Probus Club.

Duane is survived by his loving wife Barbara and their children Mark Schmeeckle, Jan (Mark) Herman, Lynn (Phil) van Steenburgh, Karen (Andrew) Serafini, Paula (Paul) Ackerley, and Steve (Anita) Schmeeckle. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren: Samantha, Matthew, Steven, and Spencer Herman; Liam and Katharine van Steenburgh; Paul, John, Peter, Mary, Teresa, and Michael Serafini (and their half-sister Annie Woods and her husband Andrew Cornett); Aidan and Shane Ackerley; and Nolan and Vivian Schmeeckle. He is also survived by his sister Ruth (Schmeeckle) Bischoff and her husband Bob Bischoff, sister-in-law Gretchen Schmeeckle, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in the United States and Canada. Duane was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Louise Schmeeckle, brothers Willis and Mark Schmeeckle, and Willis’ wife Lynn.

Many thanks to Dr. Laatsch, Dr. Skarsgard and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre staff for their ongoing kindness and support. Special thanks to Unit 73 at the Rockyview Hospital, and to Dr. Radinskaia and all of the staff at the Chinook Hospice, whose compassionate care made Duane’s final days as comfortable and peaceful as possible.

John Beattie went to be with our Lord Jesus on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, passing peacefully at the Linden Nursing Home at the age of 88 years.

John is survived by his daughter, Penny Covey (W.Ralph) and their children Jessica-Ann Covey-Wannamaker (Sean); Tyler and Nikkolas Covey and great-granddaughter Gabriella Lily Covey all of Calgary; his son Byron Staples (Judith) of 100 Mile House, BC and their children Monica Ball, Candace Staples, Tanya Staples, Desi Staples, Scott White, Christy White-Cloutier, Michael White and their respective families; as well as brother Harold Beattie (Ivy) and sisters Muriel Russell, Nancy Thomas (Gordon), and Lillian Mallas (Ron); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his loving wife of twenty-one years, Annie Beattie (2003), his parents Robert and Margaret (1950 & 1978), brother Albert (1975), sisters Margie Oliver (1984), Mary Nixon (1989) and Iris Nixon (2007) and various nieces and nephews.

John was born to Robert and Margaret Beattie on May 4, 1921 in Trewdale, SK. He later moved with his parents and siblings to Southern Alberta in 1940 where he farmed with his Dad until his passing and then continued farming with his mother until her passing. He then sold the family farm and retired into the Hamlet of Rolling Hills in 1978. In 1982 he met and married his wife Annie P Beattie (from BC) and his new adventure in life began for the next 21 years. After he married Annie they lived in many places – Rolling Hills, AB; Medicine Hat, AB; Cranbrook, BC; Falkland, BC; Stavely, AB; Delburne, AB; and finally Olds, AB until he was moved into the Linden Nursing Home.

John enjoyed travelling to different places, learning new things and spending time with family and friends. John was an avid curler in his younger days and enjoyed hockey and a rousing game of Cribbage and shuffleboard and hanging out at the seniors hall. He also enjoyed doing puzzles and search-word games. He was a quiet and simple man but had a wealth of love for his family and friends. He had a very close relationship with his daughter Penny and her children Jessica, Tyler and Nikkolas. John was a kind and loving man and respected by all that knew him. He will be sadly missed by all.

The family wishes to thank the many very special nurses assigned to John’s care and to all the nurses and doctors at the Olds Hospital Acute Care Ward, Olds, AB and the Linden Nursing Home, Linden, AB.

Earl Browne of Okotoks, went home to be with his Lord on March 31, 2010 at the age of 84.

He will be dearly missed by his wife Dorys of fifty-seven years; also his loving family, Edward, Linda, Debra, Wendy, Lori, Conrad and their spouses, plus thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His grandson, Aaron, predeceased him in 2003 due to a mountain climbing accident.

Earl felt honored to serve his country in the navy during WWII. He saw action in the North Atlantic and South Pacific. Later he joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and served in Korea and on peace keeping duties in Germany. After his discharge he was employed with the St. John Ambulance and then the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation. Hockey was a great part of Earl’s life, being a trainer for army leagues and community teams in Kingston, ON and Calgary. He was the first trainer for Calgary Canucks Jr “Aâ€, trainer for Okotoks Bisons Jr “B†and an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Okotoks Oilers Jr “Aâ€. He also made time to volunteer for Boy Scouts, Big Brothers, Between Friends, on the Palliative Care Team at the Rockyview Hospital, flu clinics and church boards. Plus he looked forward to church camps every summer. His life has touched many and he felt so blessed by all the lives that crossed his path.

A memorial service will be held April 10th at 1:00 p.m. at Okotoks Evangelical Free Church (28 Westland Road, Okotoks). Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Maria Arends of Calgary passed away peacefully in her 95th year at the Sarcee Nursing Home, Calgary, on Wednesday, March 31, 2010.

She was predeceased by her husband Eugene J.W. Arends in 1999, and is survived by daughters Frida (Max) Kattenburg-Schuler and Meta (Helmut) Wieser of Calgary and son Jack (Judy) Arends of Regina; Grandchildren Monique (Steve) Cavanagh, Robert (Cheralee) Kattenburg-Schuler, Michael Wieser, Caroline (Paul) Bartel of Calgary, Jennifer Arends (Justin Messner) of Regina and Allison Arends (Tim Hanson) of Toronto; six great grandchildren, Mitchell, Jocelyn, Chelsea, Kaylee, Liam and Owen. Mam lived a full life and enjoyed her travels with Pap, with whom she was married for almost 64 years. She contributed a great deal to her ever-growing family, for which all of us are very thankful. The family gratefully acknowledges the loving care given to our mother during her stay at Sarcee Care West.

Tony Potorti, beloved husband of Carmela, passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at the age of 66. 

He was born in Casignana, Reggio Calabria, Italy on October 20, 1943 and then immigrated to Canada in 1965 and went to work in Kimberley, BC.  Tony was married in Calgary to Carmela Priolo in 1968 and later decided to move to Cranbrook to raise their family in a smaller city setting.  Five years ago, Tony and Carmela returned to Calgary to join their children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Carmela; his son Carlo (Cheryl) and daughters, Rita Astorino (Vittorio), Marisa Newton (Aaron) and Leona Wodynski (Shaun); his seven precious grandchildren, Luca, Sofia, Lidia, Milania, Abi, Delano, and Joseph; his siblings, Pina Romeo (Antonio), Antonietta Ferraro (Benito), John Potorti (Tonya Ferraro), and Rocco Potorti (Denise); his brothers-in-law, Frank Priolo (Annette Logan) and Attilio Chiarastella (Maria DaSilva); his sister-in-law Angela Priolo; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Tony was predeceased by his parents Maria and Vincenzo.

It is with deep sadness we announce the death of George Brown on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at the age of 80 years.

George was born in Edmonton, AB to Alan and Anna Brown. He spent his entire career working in the gas processing industry until his retirement in 1986. George took many wonderful trips with his wife and family. He enjoyed golfing with his dear friends at Carstairs and was an active member at the Crowfoot YMCA, where he formed many special friendships. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humour, quick wit and caring nature. George had a unique ability to make each and every person he met feel special.

He will be forever missed by his family, his daughters Shannon Brown (Murray Quibell) and Colleen Lyster (Tim), and grandchildren Shayna and Daniel Quibell and Devin and Jason Lyster, all of whom meant the world to him. George is also survived by his sister Doreen Dewald (Doug) of Stony Plain, AB, brother Bruce Brown of Morinville, AB, and many relatives in Canada and Ireland. We take great comfort in knowing he is reunited with his wife Mary, who predeceased him in 2002. He was also predeceased by his sister Margaret McCartney in 2005.

The family appreciates the outpouring of love and support from George’s many dear friends, especially Hazel Belsher. We are also grateful to Aziz and the staff of Unit 61 at the Foothills Medical Centre.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our son and brother, Harrison Austin Kathrens on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at the age of 24 years.

Harrison’s time with us was too short for him to fully mature, embrace life, and begin to realize his hopes and dreams. For that reason, in our hearts and minds he will remain “forever youngâ€.

Harrison will be sadly missed by his parents, Denise and Harley Kathrens; sisters, Shaina and Kaitlyn Kathrens; grandmother Evelyn Kathrens; and grandfather Kenneth Naylor; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Duarte Soares, of Calgary, passed away on March 30, 2010 at the age of 83 years.

Duarte was born in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Acores, and in 1967 immigrated to Canada with his wife and three young children.

He is survived by his children Carlos (Anella) Soares, Grace (John) Cunha, Manuela (Michael) Lapointe, Mario (Deborah) Soares, and Tammy Soares; ten grandchildren, Carlos Jr. (Tammy), David, Melanie, Terry (Shawna), Stephanie, Devon, Brandon, Felicia, Michael, and Emma-Marie; three great-grandchildren Carlos III, Carmine and Gabriella. Duarte is predeceased by his wife of sixty years Laurinda.
