Bluegrass Festival pics

June 7, 2006 by Nicki

A few of the pictures I took at the Bluegrass Festival turned out pretty well. Several did not because I was too far back, or it was too dark, or it was too blurry, or … you get the idea. Hopefully though, this will at least show a little smidgen of what I took in … it was a great experience, and I will definitely be attending next year’s!

Arts Council member Linda Harris was kind enough to send me a playlist of the bands we saw. Unfortunately we left early so I did not see the last band play, but what I did see and hear I *loved* so I’ve no doubt that they put on a great show.

There was a good crowd. We arrived while the first band was on stage and into their first song or two. Never having been, I wasn’t sure what to bring or not bring, how early to arrive, etc.

Now I know! :)

For instance, this group had the right idea … bring a wagon to hold your coolers and kid’s goodies:

This couple brought a tent for their little ones:

Looked comfy! And their kids were so cute. The oldest was a little boy who loved to dance and show off his Chick-fil-A fan:

How sweet.

Not all of the participants were so lively … for example, take a peek at Jessie catching a few Z’s in between sets:

And now the playlist:

First: Michelle Cone and Tew Lane Road

These guys put on a really great show. Surprisingly, a lot of the material they played I had either heard of, or knew.

Second: Blue Grass Biscuits & Surreal McCoys

Pity I didn’t have a recorder or even a notebook with me … I can’t remember anyone’s names, but several had some really good stories to share. I know at least two of the guys have websites, but I haven’t found them yet.

Third: Stone’s Throw String Band

Now these guys were FUN! The on-stage banter kept everyone laughing, and their individual styles made for some very unique and interesting songs.

The guy on the far left is playing a cello, standing up. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen that. He plays like a jazz musician.

And don’t you think he looks a little like “Mikey” on American Chopper? (I do)

Like I said, they put on a good show. I think this band was my favorite out of all of them. I mean, any bluegrass band whose members put down their instruments and starts clogging is alright with me!

I took a short video of her dancing, but it’s too far back to really see any detail. Take my word for it, it looked like fun and I wanted to join in!

Curse my short memory, I don’t remember their names, but I do know these guys are local. The husband and wife live in Mountain Brook, I remember that much.

Stone’s Throw String Band closed at dusk. It was at this point Jessie was wound down and pretty much out for the count. I knew at this point we wouldn’t be staying much longer. :(

Oh well, next year I’ll be better prepared … and I’ll make sure she gets a nap!

Fourth: James and Angela McKinney Band

These guys put on a good show as well. Unfortunately about halfway into their set, we left.

The fifth and final band was: Herb Trotman Band.

I’m told that the Bluegrass Festival is the first weekend in June every year, so count me in for next year!
