Corruption, extortion uncovered at DMOZ

August 28, 2007 by Nicki

This morning I ran across this story at Blogging Pro about a scumbag editor who attempted to extort funds from the site owner of Shoemoney.com for his already existing listing at DMOZ. Read this snippet:

A while back I got a email from a guy claiming to be a DMOZ editor saying that I had to pay him $5,000.00 or he would have my site: shoemoney.com removed from the dmoz.

I thought nothing of it … then today I got a email from him saying it was removed and I might want to rethink not paying him. I thought I would check just for grins.

It was removed … WOW

 WTF?!?!

You know, I had have the hardest time getting my listings moved to the correct categories. I am tempted to just remove them altogether. That’s a despicable act, and I’ve heard rumors of that sort of thing going on for years, but this is the first time I’ve actually seen it in “print.”

I wouldn’t believe everything you read…

That blog post is dated 26th August 2007. The “last updated” date on the category in question (http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Authoring/Webmaster_Resources/Affiliate_Programs/Weblogs/) is currently “April 12, 2007″. So any site that isn’t currently showing there, was removed on or before 1th April.

Whether or not he actually received those emails, the timing of things doesn’t really match up.

Perhaps more importantly, assuming that http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=150377 is by the same person, that bribery offer would be enough to earn the site in question a permanent ban — which could well explain why the site was actually de-listed.

From Shoemakers disclaimer which he says everyone should read before acting on the post:-

‘You should assume everything written on this blog is a lie. You should assume I have motivation for linking to everything on this page and will benefit from it somehow. …. You should question everything. You should come up with your own thoughts and opinions and not trust some stupid blogger.’

Looks like there are a lot of stupid bloggers out here…

I do not evan think people use DMOZ any more. Most links are way out dated or go to click it type pages.
