A Tiara makes the NYT

May 20, 2008 by Nicki

About two weeks ago I posted about Cotillion sister Jane Novak, who has become an outspoken advocate for a Yemeni journalist, Abdul Karim al-Khaiwani, who is facing execution for sedition. Since then, so many have signed the petition and blogged this story.

Well, today an article about Jane is featured on the New York Times blogs, and this morning made its way onto the front page of their website. Way to go, Jane!!

I encourage you to go read the article, and if you’re so inclined, please bookmark and/or save to your favorite bookmarking/sharing services:

I understand that ABC News, CNN, et. al. are also getting in on the action … Jane says:

ABC gave me a link http://abcnews.go.com/. CNN is sending a car at 12:30 for a 2:30 show. BBC Radio at 6:30.

YAY! Way to go, Jane!

I’m seeing a ton of coverage on Technorati:

Jane’s article is also listed on Technorati’s Politics channel. :D

Feeling left out?

If you have blogged or posted about this story, leave your link in the comments below and I’ll add your link to the list! (Hooray, link love!!!!)

Update

Al-Khaiwani’s verdict and sentencing case has been postponed! It looks like all the media attention got them nervous, and are probably waiting for all the “hubbub” to die down…

Slept so long

May 3, 2007 by Nicki

Had a busy day yesterday … two interviews, pretty much back-to-back, on two opposite sides of town. I was on the go pretty much all day yesterday. By the time I got in last night I crashed … and crashed hard.

I have such a good man … Jim woke me up around 10 or so last night by leaning over and making faces at me until I opened my eyes. LOL! I had forgotten to take my medicine before going to bed, so he elected to wake me — in his usual “special” way. ;)

And boy was I tired! Night before, I think I was so afraid of oversleeping that I was waking up about every hour and would sit up to check the time on the clock. I finally got up 30 minutes before the alarm was supposed to go off so I could get ready. I slept through Jim getting up and getting ready this morning and finally woke up when the phone rang around 9:30.

I’m surprised I heard it, LOL!

Both interviews went pretty well. One of them has already called me back for a second one Monday morning. Still no update from <prospective hopeful> yet. :( At this rate, I’ll most likely have an offer from another company before the proverbial red tape (or whatever the hold up is) is cleared. Oh well, can’t complain … I need a job. ;P

I had just over 300 new entries in my Google Reader this morning … I think it’s time to clear out some more feeds. LOL I don’t think I read but about a quarter of them. Most of the tech feeds I skipped over … a good majority was about the hubbub on Digg anyways.

I’m in the process of uploading some old photos to my Zooomr account now. I had been meaning to do this for ages, and now since I have the time and have organized most of them, I can upload and arrange into sets as needed (I do LOVE that feature!).

I <3 Zooomr :D

I so WANT one of these!

I was rumbling around in the Digg feeds and ran across this:

A Firefox Bankcard! How cool is that?

“My bank offered the possibility to use my own image on my bankcard. You could order it through a web interface, so I uploaded the Firefox logo onto mine and picked up the card a few days later from the bank.”

ME WANT!!! ME WANT!!! ME WANT!!! ME WANT!!! ME WANT!!! ME WANT!!!

Another recall

March 16, 2007 by Nicki

It seems there have been a LOT of food recalls lately. You’ve all heard about the peanut butter recall, right? I was browsing around Digg and an entry caught my eye: “Cat/Dog supplies recalled due to pet deaths.” Yikes!

After digging around a bit (no pun intended), I found the original AP article:

WASHINGTON — A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food today after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

“At this juncture, we’re not 100 percent sure what’s happened,†said Paul Henderson, the company’s president and chief executive officer.

The recall covers the company’s “cuts and gravy†style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Co., Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site — www.menufoods.com/recall — early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (800) 551-7392.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

“To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product,†Henderson said.

The company alerted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working today to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.

Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada.

I feel so bad for those poor owners. :(
