The Con is on!
February 17, 2009 by Nicki
Remember last year when we attended OmegaCon? We had a blast, and considering it was the con’s first year, I’d have called it a major success. But I became worried that it had been too successful and had moved on to another town — the website had gone down, the MySpace page had gone quiet and hadn’t been updated in a coon’s age, etc. It seemed to have dropped off the face of the planet … until I re-discovered it today!
I had been sitting in a meeting and had the good fortune to be sitting near a terminal with internet access. (Google to the rescue!) I ran across a reference on a local Star Wars forum to an event called “ImagiCon.” Another quick Google and I had found the website: ImagiCon.org. From the sound of it, it’s the same con, but renamed, with a spiffy website, and by the look of it a lot more to see this year.
YAY!

Ok, so who else is going?
Arm warmer love
January 9, 2009 by Nicki
Comments Off
I’m a bit of a sucker for ‘odd’ accessories, and for years my long black Express arm warmers have been my absolute favorites. I love wearing them with t-shirts on days/nights where it’s too warm for a jacket or long sleeves, but too cold to be bare-armed. And when I get too hot, I simply pull them off and stuff into my backpack. I had bought them on Gothic Auctions years ago and unfortunately the material is now pilled to Hades and back, and is wearing thin around the wrists and palms.
I had been searching on and off for the last year for a set of replacements. On a whim, I tried eBay and after about 5,000,000 pages of lame excuses for arm warmers that would barely cover my forearms, I see an entry that said something to the effect of, “Black extra long arm warmers”
I hit gold!
It turns out there’s a young lady who hand makes these, so I ordered a pair right before Christmas. I’m happy to say that they are EXACTLY what I had been looking for all this time!
Here are a couple pics from the auction:

And a pic of the tag on my pair:

These things fit great, are super soft, and look fantastic!!
She makes them in varying sizes and colors, so next payday I’ll definitely be ordering more. Her website is being re-done at the moment, so check her eBay store in the meantime.
She makes all kinds of interesting clothing and accessories. I can easily see Jessie wanting to shop there in a year or so.
You can find her via the following locations:
www.trixyxchange.etsy.com
www.diytrixy.etsy.com
www.stores.ebay.com/trixyxchange
www.myspace.com/trixyxchange
Thank you, Trixy!
Out of context, out of line?
January 5, 2009 by Nicki
This afternoon, Jim (unintentionally) gave me quite a scare. When last I saw him this morning, he was going to head by the house then on to work. I remember pulling onto the highway and watching him roll onto the lane going in the opposite direction. Fast forward to this afternoon, John called me at work asking me if I knew where Jim was. “What? He’s not there?” My mind raced. John had spoken to him not long after I last saw him and hadn’t seen nor heard from him since.
Long story short: Jim had sat down “for a few moments” at his desk and apparently had fallen asleep — he had been at home the whole time.
I was able to get a hold of him after calling the house a few times and he explained what happened. I fussed a small bit (not wanting to yell at work) and got my things together to leave for the day. A few co-workers had overheard and came by to make sure everything was ok. I was still pumped up on adrenaline and my blood-pressure I’m sure was through the roof. I jokingly replied, “Yeah. I’m going to beat him upside the head when I get home!”
Now, anyone who knows me knows that I say that in jest. In fact, I say that I’ll “beat his head in” all the time. I don’t beat my husband. I don’t beat my child. I laugh and carry-on, but it is entirely in jest. I do as my mother did — joke about it to keep from pulling my hair out and going crazy.
But what if someone had heard what I said, took it out of context, and called the police?
I ran across a Google Reader item shared by Ike Pigott linking to a post by someone who had something along those lines happen to her. Thordora had (in jest) commented on Twitter about bringing harm to her child, who wouldn’t go to sleep.
What NORMAL parent hasn’t uttered a snarky or humorously ludicrous remark out of frustration, annoyance, and dare I said it … love?
Someone following her tweets had local police notified of the “threat”. Officers arrived at her home and demanded to see her children (who obviously had not been harmed). Understandably, Thordora is upset with this person. (As I would be too!)
To me though, this reinforces something that I had come to realize through my experiences on other social networking services (mainly MySpace and Facebook) — careful who you “friend”.

One of the things I hadn’t thought of looking into backing up on my Helio Ocean was my bookmarks. Sure, I have my custom bookmarks for Opera Mini stored on their server, but the ones to my native Helio browser are gone. I had quite a few that I can’t seem to find at the moment. So, in the meantime, I thought I’d pop a few in a post so I can surf back here and recover them later.

Huntsville happenings
June 16, 2008 by Nicki
I received an email from CA Marks, of Alabama Improper fame. She’s started up a new site called Color Me Huntsville which covers local happenings in Huntsville, Alabama. I spent the morning going over her site and so far it looks great! Kind of reminds me of the early Terminal days.
So if you’re in the Rocket City area, be sure to check out her site! Also, be sure to tune in to her column by the same name in The Huntsville Times, as well as her MySpace page!
Sewing, Angeling, and a car update
June 4, 2008 by Nicki
Things have been pretty quiet … or mostly quiet. Jessie’s mother is on vacation, so she’s spending the week with her. I miss her terribly, but I’ve had time to devote to a couple projects that I’ve been wanting to give attention to, so it works out for that.
Sew, sew, sew…
When I was younger, I loved to sew. I used to cross-stitch, make stuffed animals and various clothing items for myself and friends. I haven’t stitched anything in years, with the exception of a couple of costumes that Jessie needed for school about 3-4 years back. I had been wanting to start it up again, but wasn’t sure how or if I would have enough time.
A post on the Soldiers’ Angels blog yesterday has really kicked this need into high-gear. There are several sewing projects on the Soldiers’ Angels site, and several of them are various Blanket teams/projects — the newest being Blankets of Belief.
Now, I know I don’t have the time to commit to quilting or sewing blankets and such by hand, but there was a link on the Blankets of Belief page on how to make a “no-sew” blanket. These are basically fleece blankets that are constructed in such a way that no sewing is involved — if you can tie a knot, you can make one of these!
Sounds perfect!
As soon as I’m able, I’ll be stocking up on materials to make one of these. If it turns out well (read: pretty!), I’ll post pics on here.
Bama Angeling
I’ve been doing a lot of work on the Bama Angels site and have started expanding my “pimpage” to a few social networking sites. So far, it’s up on MySpace, Twitter, Pownce, Facebook, and FriendFeed. I’ve had a LOT of positive response from area Angels and now I need to work on finding information to post to Bama Angels.
I usually get announcements via word of mouth or The Birmingham News, but it would be nice to get all that other Alabama and military related news that gets missed!
If you know of anything, please feel free to send it my way!
Car Update
It’s in the body shop and I was told yesterday that they’ve ordered parts and will begin taking it apart and working on it hopefully today or tomorrow. Realistically speaking, I’ll be lucky if I get it back before the end of this month.
Not thrilled with that, but what can I do? ;P Have otherwise been going back and forth with the insurance company regarding other stuff that’s still unsettled and may need legal handling, but can’t really post about that yet. (will update when able)
I know I’m lucky that we don’t have to pay for all this stuff out of our own pockets (or rather, out of our savings accounts), but honestly, this whole process is enough to drive anyone bonkers!
I blame John :)
I decided to kill a little time waiting for Futurama to come on, and stole this from John.

You find people in the funniest places
May 29, 2007 by Nicki
As much as I avoided most of the social networking type sites when they began gaining in popularity (i.e. MySpace, Facebook, etc.), I found myself eventually dragged into them in order to keep up with loved ones. For instance, I originally joined MySpace so I could keep up with my brother and help out with his campaign last year. Since then, I have been discovered by more people from high school and college than those I had previously connected with via Classmates.com and Reunion.com. (Funny how that is!) I’ve since in started getting back in touch with old acquaintances via MySpace, LinkedIn, Facebook (a LOT of my former co-workers are on the latter two!), MeetUp, Virb, Jaiku, … heck, even one of my Twitter friends recognized me in a restaurant a week or so ago!
Cool how that is.
In fact, a friend of mine from college now surfs — well, he surfed during college, but now he does it for a living. Funniest looking thing he was back then: tall, skinny, long blond curly hair that he usually teased up into a ‘fro. Sweet guy though, I heard he married a girl from Vestavia. He now goes all over the world. He had emailed me a schedule of places he’s going: Southern CA, Outer Banks NC, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Japan! (I never knew surfing was big there?)
Another friend I ran across on MySpace — he was one of my best friends in high school. He graduated 2 years ahead of me and went into the Navy. He now lives in Nevada and bounces between there and Japan and works for the gaming industry.
(Color me green with envy on that one!
)
Anyways, it’s just neat how people you know are everywhere and can be found literally anywhere.
Don’tcha think?
Another tale of bad service
March 25, 2007 by Nicki
A friend of mine posted this via her MySpace account. Whenever I receive things like this, I normally hit up Snopes first to see if it’s a hoax. Didn’t find squat, so next I hit Google. Again, nothing.
If this story is true, it’s deplorable — and believable. A friend of mine has two children with Down Syndrome and I’m sorry to say that I’ve been out with her family before and have seen similar treatment received. It never ceases to amaze me that in this day and age, people can still be so freakin’ ignorant. (and in most cases, very cruel)
I don’t know who the original author is, but I hope that if this is indeed real, she will post a follow-up. Or, if anyone knows anything about the incident or the poor mother, please post!

Subject: Friend needs our HELP read and repost please!!!
It has come to my attention. A friend of ours (autism community) was recently treated badly in California at an Applebee’s restaurant because her child has Autism. Here is the letter that she has let me post here in hopes that we can DO SOMETHING to help her. Call the media? Something.. Bring AWARENESS to the public…SOME JUSTICE for the inhumanity that this piece of crap manager imposed on OUR FRIEND…OUR FAMILY….Please repost this and if you live in the area please contact the proper people so that something can be done!!!!!!!
Karrie
Dear Applebee’s,
I write you as a faithful patron of your chain who left the restaurant feeling discriminated and disgraced as single mother tonight. I look for Apple bees because the food is reasonable and it’s nice atmosphere. I am single parent and I have a child with autism. He is four years old and limited verbal his name is Andy. Time to time I take him to your restaurant in Fountain Valley, California and we have had a wonderful time.
Tonight I got him out of the car to choose where to eat he ran to Apple Bees with a smile on his face. This is his favorite place. He does not understand when food was passing right by him and he had nothing. When we first sat down I asked the waitress to give us something as soon as possible. 10 minutes later we got our drinks and crackers. . . .I was singing to Andy doing everything I could every time food went by he let out a short yelp. I was pulling out everything in my bag of tricks I could. Then he calm down.
The manager came to me and told me because of my child he lost business (boy I felt guilty). I felt as though my heart was being ripped into two. I try so hard with my son. I told him my son was waiting for food –chips anything. I apologized and told him my son does not speak much and has autism and I’m sorry. He came back a second time and told he was losing more business because of my son. I had to do something. All my son wanted was drinks something. He came back told me we had to leave. I’m sorry I told him. This time every one was looking at us because of the manager kept making a huge deal and coming to our table. We were yet to get our food. My heart was sinking and all my son wanted was food! I felt stepped upon like yesterday’s trash.
I had to pull my fifty pound four year old out of his favorite place in tears. This posed a tremendous safety hazard and was totally unnecessary. I feel like my heart was smashed in a million pieces. When we were out the door the manager said “I had to do I have to do and that I should not take my son out if he is not fit (How is he qualified to make this comment).†As he plopped a bag of food to go in my hand.
I take my son out to eat a lot and we have never been kicked out and disgraced like this. We ate at this restaurant a lot. He just a little kid–and if they would brought him food–or drinks–I could not get him out the door after he ran in because he was at his favorite place–I understand why he did what he did but he did not have to be cruel he could have done it differently –instead me having to pull him out in tears. I do not have much money and I try to get my son positive experiences and take him to places he enjoys I earned a gift certificate from my work and I took him there for a good time. I usually can not afford Apple Bees and I take him there as a reward he lights up so much in the restaurant.
I feel belittled and disgraced and this hurts this truly hurts. I feel like I have been ran over by a Mac truck. How can I ever take my sweet my little boy to his favorite place again let alone out to eat in public again?

It’s all about the feeds
March 16, 2007 by Nicki
I’ve been stuffing my Google Reader fat … no, I mean REALLY FAT! lol Ever since switching, I’ve subscribed to what seems like every feed under the sun. Ranging from open source softwares to *ahem* “opened” source sites, to cook books and recipes, to all of my fav LJ and MySpace monkeys (seriously, Virb will blow those away … someday!
), to local news and football updates (Can you say ‘Roll Tide’?), to politics, to even web 2.0 theory forums, to just the general stuff: Adobe, Microsoft, Mozilla, WordPress, etc. You name it, I probably read it. LOL!
I’m not sure how, but I think it stems from getting the odd or out of the blue “Hey, do you know where I could find [whatever off the wall request] ?”
I swear, some people must think I’m omnipotent or something … someone IM’d me this morning wanting to know what video conferencing software I use. LOL! The last time I did anything like that, it was with with NetMeeting, and I was most likely still using Windows 95. *snickers* Look people, I don’t know shit … but I can look it up.
Did you know that Adobe has come out with a service that searches feeds? I didn’t until I started writing this and stopped to read a few new entries on one of my subscribed feeds. It’s called myFeedz. How cool is that?
Seriously, it’s really cool — or, at least I think so! Many sites are getting into providing more efficient ways of getting their content out there so you can read at your leisure without having to open a browser (unless it’s browser-based, obviously) to get the latest news, content, opinions, etc.
God, I love RSS.
