Table of conÂtents for ClearÂing Body, Mind, Spirit
For those of you that have been readÂing Into the CenÂtre and browsÂing the webÂsite, you’ll not be surÂprised to see a series of artiÂcles appearÂing over the next few weeks, conÂcernÂing the ‘empÂtyÂing’ of body, mind and spirit.
The Bliss of an Empty Mind

Although it sort of seems like I’m givÂing away the farm, 99.5% of the work I do as a counÂselÂlor is exactly the same. And, this work matches my perÂsonal expeÂriÂence as I explore and ‘work on’ myself. I’m about to reveal this secret to you, and the odd part is that I know that
Rather than jump right in, let me quote a client.
“Some of this is my learnÂing to take a sitÂuÂaÂtion and folÂlow it through from start to end (the midÂdle is a mudÂdle in my expeÂriÂence — I can start and see the end, but then someÂthing goes on regardÂing the midÂdle parts.)â€
Now, you’ll notice that I did not reveal the issue my client was askÂing about, and that’s for a good reason—the reaÂson is irrelevant!
For refÂerÂence, the “beginÂning†is the issue, and the “end†is the resÂoÂluÂtion. The midÂdle is where the probÂlem lies. In the midÂdle, the mudÂdle is how much time we waste on our interÂnal dialogs – the bitchÂing, moanÂing and comÂplainÂing – what I call The Drama. The midÂdle, while not optional, is cerÂtainly not important.
It’s NEVER About What You Think It’s About
PickÂing up from our last artiÂcle, let me remind you of a key point. Our culÂtures and tribes have proÂvided us with a strucÂture through which to view our realÂity. From a bioÂlogÂiÂcal perÂspecÂtive, all there is is senÂsory data. VibraÂtions of some sort (light, sound, tacÂtile, etc.) ‘hit’ us conÂstantly.
Here’s an illusÂtraÂtion from my book, This EndÂless Moment, p 85–86
This secÂtion helps us to see that ‘stuff’ is comÂing at us all the time, and we are only aware of a fracÂtion of it. In other words, ‘things’ become real only when we notice them.
It’s All a FigÂment of Your Imagination
We resist the notion that nothÂing is real until we ‘see’ it. It’s one of those Zen mind games, like, “What is the sound of one hand clapÂping?†I made that one into a tee shirt:
Or, the ever popÂuÂlar quesÂtion, “If a man speaks in a forÂest, and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?†Couldn’t resist…
In BudÂdhism, there is a difÂferÂenÂtiÂaÂtion between apparÂent realÂity and ultiÂmate realÂity. It is also framed it as the conÂtrast between the authenÂtic and the actual self. In BudÂdhist thought, ignoÂrance rather than ‘sin’ (right /wrong, good / bad) is the issue to be dealt with.
UltiÂmate realÂity is best described as “is-ness.â€
In TaoÂism, they say, “The way it is, is the way it is.“
The ultiÂmate realÂity is: while everyÂthing exists,
it lacks meanÂing.
Try this: point up. Now, is someÂone on the other side of the globe pointÂing the same way? Of course not! There is no “ultiÂmate upâ€â€”there is just the direcÂtion that is “up†for you.
ApparÂent realÂity is “what is,†with your opinÂions and judgeÂments attached. In other words, the direcÂtion that is ‘up’ for you is declared to be the right direcÂtion, and everyÂone else is wrong! ApparÂent realÂity is sticky, and it’s where we spend our time when we’re in our heads, judgÂing, plotÂting, and scheming.
Why EmptiÂness?
This is the key issue for any perÂsonal develÂopÂment schema. When I first became acquainted with ‘emptiÂness,’ it was in the conÂtext of Existentialism—the nihilisÂtic “angst,“or fear of death —hooked to the conÂcept of meanÂingÂlessÂness. Later philosoÂphers, like MatÂuÂrana, sugÂgested “Life is a PurÂposeÂless Drift.†BudÂdhist ‘emptiÂness’ has nothÂing to do with any of this.
Zen is about obserÂvaÂtion of “what is.†Now, the ‘what is’ is the ‘what is’ below your filÂters and assumpÂtions. In other words, the goal and point of Zen is to watch your mind as it meaning-makes, while not attachÂing to either the process or your assumpÂtions. In this way, the mind sort of slides to the side, and you peer past the mind-games to the essenÂtial ‘emptiÂness’ of everything.
Hey Wayne, Enough With the PhiÂlosÂoÂphy LesÂson! Gimme Some Practicalities
OK, OK.
ExamÂple 1: This past weekÂend, DarÂbella and I attended the UpTown WaterÂloo Jazz FesÂtiÂval. First set was a band, and the first 5 minÂutes was an improv of a parÂticÂuÂlarly jarÂring kind. Dar and love this. A 20-something couÂple sat down near us. After 5 minÂutes, they marched out. I judged that they hated the music.
Now, here are my judgements.
ExamÂple 2: Have a look at this picÂture. Who is this woman? Tell yourÂself a story, based only upon the picture.

Now, can you fathom that your story has absolutely nothÂing to do with the woman in the picÂture? The story you told yourÂself is totally and comÂpletely about you!
LearnÂing to ‘Let it Be’
Back to the client I quoted at the beginÂning. Here is my edited reply:
Next ArtiÂcle, we’ll look at the four prinÂciÂples for dealÂing with the issues that arise — RecogÂniÂtion, AccepÂtance, InvesÂtiÂgaÂtion, and Non-Identification (R.A.I.N.)
