Table of conÂtents for ClearÂing Body, Mind, Spirit
For those of you that have been readÂing Into the CenÂtre and browsÂing the webÂsite, you’ll not be surÂprised to see a series of artiÂcles conÂcernÂing the ‘empÂtyÂing’ of body, mind and spirit.
You Either Do it, or You Don’t
So, I’m thinkÂing that trainÂing as a psyÂchotherÂaÂpist is not a bad model for learnÂing to exerÂcise self-mastery.
What I’m thinkÂing is that doing an acaÂdÂeÂmic counÂselling degree has two comÂpoÂnents: textÂbook and expeÂriÂenÂtial. Things are apparÂently difÂferÂent now, but back when I was a stuÂdent in the early 80s, you showed up at your practicum locaÂtion, and within a day or so, they handed you your first couÂple of clients.
In other words, you learned by doing.
And this is the key to this series of artiÂcles. NothÂing in your life changes until what you are doing changes.
Excuses, Excuses
I often hear lists of excuses for not doing things difÂferÂently. It’s always a variÂant of, “I can’t do (whatÂever) until I’m sure I’ll do it right.†I’m surÂprised how often this is said with a straight face.
I did a comÂmuÂniÂcaÂtion exerÂcise once at a workÂshop with a woman who used the model quite well.
She said, “I’ve been takÂing comÂmuÂniÂcaÂtion courses for 5 years, so I can learn how to comÂmuÂniÂcate with my son.†She indiÂcated that she hadn’t actuÂally tried it with him, but was getÂting closer.
I sugÂgested she stop takÂing courses and actuÂally comÂmuÂniÂcate with her son, as she was doing a great job with me.
She was amazed.
The Myth of: It ‘Should’ be Easy!
The flip side of this, which hapÂpens a lot these days, due to the emphaÂsis on easy and quick, is that many peoÂple expect (seemÂingly paraÂdoxÂiÂcally) that ‘getÂting it’ should be easy.
The other day, a perÂson seekÂing therÂapy told me she’d tried other approaches and now wanted the ‘quick fix.’ I sugÂgested that she actuÂally impleÂment some of the ‘slow fixes’ she’d learned, but never applied.
I rememÂber workÂing with a client, briefly, who wanted to get a MasÂters in counÂselling withÂout first havÂing to go through the bother of a BA. She’d been workÂing at a Women’s ShelÂter, and decided that the UniÂverÂsity should take her 5 years expeÂriÂence and that she was 45 into account, skip the whole, tedious BA thing, and let her start an accelÂerÂated MA. She was highly offended that they didn’t see it that way.
This approach might be thought of as instant enlightÂenÂment, withÂout the work.
The Self MasÂtery Connection
That’s why I talked about [tag]self mastery[/tag] last artiÂcle. Many are the excuses for anyÂthing but.
Some think they are too stuÂpid or weak or scared.
OthÂers blame upbringÂing or present circumstances.
I’ve actuÂally had peoÂple tell me that my relaÂtionÂship with DarÂbella looks easy, and thereÂfore it must have to do with both of us being experts and speÂcial peoÂple. I laugh.
Last weekÂend we were in MonÂtréal, visÂitÂing a friend. On the way home, we stopped at a Rest Stop, and I decided to use a stall for ‘mornÂing abluÂtions.’ I walked in, and looked on top of the toiÂlet paper dispenser.
“Willpower is my Selfhood.â€
Now, I’m a synÂchronicÂity and irony kind of guy, but that one was really interÂestÂing. The lanÂguage is a bit kludgy, but I grok where he is comÂing from. I might put it, “Self masÂtery is self-less†and I’d likely be meanÂing the same thing.
The BudÂdha said some variÂant of, “All that you are is a prodÂuct of what you have thought.†He meant that how we think deterÂmines our self-identity and our view of the world. It’s not the ‘right’ view, but rather how we frame our realÂity. Once we get the joke that the frame is warped by our perÂcepÂtions, we can have a laugh and let it go.
The letÂting go, howÂever, is an action. Let’s say you’re afraid to try someÂthing. TypÂiÂcally, you mainÂtain this stance by rememÂberÂing all the other times you were afraid of someÂthing, simÂiÂlar and disÂsimÂiÂlar. In other words, you try to ratioÂnalÂize stayÂing stuck in fear by refÂerÂencÂing other times you were afraid. Seems reaÂsonÂable, right?
Well, it is, if what you want to do is stay stuck in fear.
The alterÂnaÂtive is not to plunge ahead with reckÂless abanÂdon (although that can be fun and I am often a fan of it.) The alterÂnaÂtive is to acknowlÂedge the fear (“Hi again, fear!â€) while statÂing what you will do. And then doing it.
Thus, the BudÂdha might say, “All that you are is what you are doing.â€
Next issue, we’ll look at self masÂtery through actÂing, withÂout excuse.
In the mean time, lisÂten to the stoÂries you repeat, endÂlessly, that are specifÂiÂcally designed to keep you stuck, hurtÂing, and a vicÂtim of your own stoÂries. Notice the attracÂtion of endÂlessly delayÂing changÂing your words and behavÂiours (you can’t change your thoughts, but you can stop believÂing them.) Notice your desÂperÂate search for the magic cure that will ‘fix you, once and for all.’
Drop the delays and get on with actÂing in the direcÂtion you choose to go. PracÂtice what you are learnÂing, all the time. Notice you are getÂting betÂter at it, with practice.
Then, have a breath and sense the power of self-mastery.

Great post, there is no change withÂout action.
