A few thoughts about Non Duality
I recently cranked out another chapÂter in my newest book, which, by the bye, is comÂing out by July of next year, this chapÂter conÂcernÂing Non DualÂity.
It’s, to me anyÂway, and odd litÂtle conÂcept, and easÂily misunderstood.
Let’s begin with dualÂity.
A way of thinkÂing of dualÂity is that one only knows someÂthing as it is comÂpared to its oppoÂsite — sort of ‘this’ / ‘not this.’
For examÂple, take height. Short and tall are relÂaÂtive conÂcepts. In other words, there is no charÂacÂterÂisÂtic ‘tall’ that is a part of what is being described. To put this another way, Michael JorÂdan is tall - comÂpared to the ‘national averÂage,’ and to those shorter than he is. He is short comÂpared to peoÂple taller than he.
This flies in the face of the deep westÂern desire to label things — to come up with a rigid list — and (most imporÂtant! — a perÂmaÂnent list.
Thus, in dualÂity, there are ONLY oppoÂsites — good OR bad, right OR wrong, tall OR short.
Non dualÂity is not at all interÂested in lists. Non dual thinkÂing is that all things are everyÂthing, all the extremes and everyÂthing else in between.
WestÂernÂers try to sneak around the conÂcept of non dualÂity by sayÂing, “I’m not a blank and white thinker. After all, things are really shades of gray.â€
Many peoÂple I know tend to see themÂselves as ‘free thinkers.’ In a sense, they are fixÂated on ‘free thinkÂing’ just as firmly as someÂone who thinks there is only one answer. ExamÂple; atheÂists have just as much faith in their belief as do the ‘theÂists’ they are criticizing.
Non dualÂity,
on the other hand, (he writes with a smirk) is about loosÂenÂing ones grip on one note being. Life becomes a dance. You notice that you are judgÂing, labelling, boxÂing things up, and you have a breath and let go of the defÂiÂnÂiÂtions. In this letÂting go process, your expeÂriÂence expands, and you see that whatÂever is going on has many aspects, all equally true.
AnyÂthing Goes?
Now, to westÂern minds, that can sound an awful lot like “anyÂthing goes.†And in a sense, it is, as anyÂthing is how things are.
The other day, I was watchÂing a friend get her shorts in a knot over office polÂiÂtics. She was upsetÂting herÂself, and she really wanted everyÂone else to ‘see the light.’
In other words, to see it her way.
I was thinkÂing that they probÂaÂbly felt the same about her view.
This Leads to SevÂeral Approaches
Or, as Gandhi put it,
“You must be the change you want to see in the world.â€
Far too often, all we hear are lecÂtures about what’s wrong, bad, stuÂpid. I would much rather see an examÂple of eleÂgant, full bodÂied, dedÂiÂcated, and clear livÂing.
Gandhi again: “Always aim at comÂplete harÂmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at puriÂfyÂing your thoughts and everyÂthing will be well.â€
Notice that the three harÂmoÂnious states (thought, word, deed) are perÂsonal. PuriÂfyÂing your thoughts is non-dual thinkÂing — not right, not wrong, but rather, ‘thought.’
The Tao — EmbracÂing the Non-Duality
Here’s the first line of the Tao te Ching: (see this transÂlaÂtion)
1. The Way (the Tao) that can be folÂlowed is not the eterÂnal Way.
The name that can be named is not the eterÂnal name.
The nameÂless is the oriÂgin of heaven and earth
While namÂing is the oriÂgin of the myrÂiad things.
ThereÂfore, always desireÂless, you see the mysÂtery
Ever desirÂing, you see the manÂiÂfesÂtaÂtions.
These two are the same—
When they appear they are named difÂferÂently.
This sameÂness is the mysÂtery,
MysÂtery within mysÂtery;
The door to all marvels.
The Dao difÂferÂenÂtiÂates between namÂing and being. Notice, howÂever, that there is no sense that one state is betÂter than the other.
What’s being said is this: The Tao (we might think ‘cosÂmic, creÂative, unseen energy) is that which brings the uniÂverse about. This uniÂverse has subÂstance, but lacks defÂiÂnÂiÂtion. NamÂing (labelling, judgÂing) brings about ‘thing-ness’ — stuff exists, as soon as it is labeled, as sepÂaÂrate items.
ExamÂple: A baby has no sepÂaÂrateÂness and idenÂtity until a parÂent pokes it and says, “You are Susie!†In westÂern thought, difÂferÂenÂtiÂaÂtion from parÂent is a key task of infancy. This is done by labelÂing, “me, not me.â€
DesireÂless Desire
When we are desireÂless, we see the energy’s flow everyÂwhere. When we desire, we fixÂate on the thing we desire, and the essence of ‘all else’ goes background.
Here’s the joke (the mysÂtery.) When we name or desire, nothÂing essenÂtial has changed. Essence (the Tao) is there all the time, like Muzak in an eleÂvaÂtor. When we drop the namÂing and desirÂing, we fall into the essence.
It’s a game. That’s all.
I menÂtioned a few issues ago the “ComÂplaint Free World CamÂpaign.†The book and bracelets arrived last week. The idea is simÂple. If you comÂplain, gosÂsip, or critÂiÂcize out loud, you move your purÂple bracelet to the other arm. The goal is to go 21 days withÂout complaining.
My favourite moment so far: I was workÂing on the comÂputer and someÂthing hapÂpened, and I comÂplained out loud to the computer!
AnyÂway, I’m findÂing that I’m down to one or two ‘slips’ a day. At this rate, I’m guessÂing 3 months to get to 21 days in a row.
Now, here’s the part I interÂest myself over. YesÂterÂday, I found myself writÂing snippy, abrupt e-mails, someÂthing I don’t do much. I notice, today, I’m feelÂing hard-done-by. Annoyed. At the same time, I’m feelÂing much more at peace, as I study and write about stuff I like, as I hang out with Dar durÂing the snowÂstorm. It’s almost as if my ‘ego’ is noticÂing this addiÂtional ‘calm,’ and is tossÂing in more drama.
So far, I have held these expeÂriÂences together, at the same time, and just let them be. I am unaware of judgÂing what I am doing. On the other hand, I am labelling what I am doing. One is one thing, the other is the other, and this is what I am doing. Until I choose someÂthing else.
You are not a ‘one way, one note’ being. You are whoÂever and whatÂever you choose, whatÂever and whoÂever you turn your attenÂtion to. And at the same time, you are also everyÂthing else you are — this stuff is simÂply ‘in the background.’
PerÂhaps the best seaÂsonal gift you can give yourÂself is to appreÂciÂate the mysÂtery, and dedÂiÂcate yourÂself to harÂmony of thought, word, and deed.
It’s cerÂtainly One Way…
