FindÂing our Way Amid the Drama
So, as you might expect, I “pulled up†this line watchÂing a slugÂgish toiÂlet. Never a dull moment here, let me tell ya.
AnyÂway, I started to think about clients, the world, and livÂing life in the “real world.†Part of this has to do with the drama of a brand new Olympics, and the war-let hapÂpenÂing in GeorÂgia, and the war games in the Atlantic, and the beheadÂing in ManÂiÂtoba, and on, and on. Then, the SepÂtemÂber issue of ShambÂhala Sun arrived, and it feaÂtures a couÂple of artiÂcles on the same theme. I then received this weird e-mail from a marÂketer whose stuff I occaÂsionÂally read, and he made refÂerÂence to the aforeÂmenÂtioned Atlantic War Games.
Stuff pilÂing up like that leads me to think, “Hmm. MayÂhap an article.â€
One of the quotes in the ShambÂhala Sun artiÂcle is from U of Toronto proÂfesÂsor Thomas Homer-Dixon. He talks about our “cogÂniÂtive charÂacÂterÂisÂtics,†and espeÂcially one he calls slow-creep. He sugÂgests that we are genetÂiÂcally preÂdisÂpoÂsiÂtioned to not notice small, increÂmenÂtal changes. In other words, “…it’s what makes it posÂsiÂble to get up in the mornÂing and not feel we’re in a strange new world.†This one thing, which is necÂesÂsary for our surÂvival, also may be our downfall.
In Canada, for examÂple, our gas is now at about 1.25 a liter where we live, makÂing gas about 5.00 a galÂlon. I read an artiÂcle when gas started headÂing up, and the writer sugÂgested 1.60 and 2.00 a liter as “tipÂping points.†1.60 will be where peoÂple start changÂing their driÂving habits, and 2.00 will be where driÂving becomes next to imposÂsiÂble for many peoÂple. Here’s how “slow-creep†fits in. Six months ago, gas was around a buck. Even takÂing into account the steady increase that hapÂpened last month, most peoÂple grumÂbled a bit, maybe slowed down driÂving a bit, and then, went back to norÂmal. As gas has been dropÂping for the last week, I’m sure many are thinkÂing, “See. It will be back below a buck soon!†I guess I’m thinkÂing “we†will someÂhow accept even 2.00 gas, so as not to disÂturb our preÂcious litÂtle lives.
I know, cheap illusÂtraÂtion. But interÂestÂing point. My younger clients seem numb to the posÂsiÂbilÂity that anyÂthing subÂstanÂtial could ever change. One told me how, at age 30, she was preÂpared to raise her kids, and then “catch up†finanÂcially when she hits 45. This is the typÂiÂcal capÂiÂtalÂist view: that there are unlimÂited resources, and unlimÂited room for fisÂcal growth, and also that techÂnolÂogy will solve everyÂthing. It’s the “gas comÂpaÂnies have been hidÂing fuel effiÂcient cars for decades, and now they’ll just crank them out and everyÂthing will be well.â€
I wonÂder if the Romans didn’t think the same thing when the barÂbarÂians were at the gates: “Rome has never been defeated. We’ll turn this around.â€
Well, what if?
It’s no wonÂder that a BudÂdhist pubÂliÂcaÂtion is sugÂgestÂing a re-think. MindÂfulÂness is all about comÂing into a clear and present view of life, livÂing and self. There is no place for “pie in the sky†thinkÂing. Rather, it’s about being relentÂlessly realistic.
See How SimÂple it All is?
There are entirely too many plates spinÂning, each depenÂdent on “things stayÂing the same,†(unlimÂited resources / unlimÂited growth) and as anyÂone with open eyes knows, things never stay the same.
Zen is relentÂlessly pracÂtiÂcal. One of the earÂmarks of Zen MonasÂterÂies was their self-sufficiency. They realÂized that being supÂported by the State was what we now call “being on the dole.†You either capitÂuÂlated to the State’s demands, or you starved. So, Zen Monks grew food and sold stuff and, of course, solicited donaÂtions (a minor thing, mostly used to teach the Monks humilÂity.) Each comÂmuÂnity, in other words, depended on itself, and the strength for this came from medÂiÂtaÂtion (zazen.)
Today, we selÂdom know our neighÂbours’ names. Most peoÂple haven’t a clue what a hamÂmer does, let alone how to hold one. There exists this Pollyanna-like foolÂishÂness that it’s all going to come out just fine. Hint: this time, I’m not so sure.
Rather than get into doomsÂday sceÂnarÂios, (or to disÂparÂage them and be like the neo-cons, who are, indeed, cons…) I say, find some like minded peoÂple around you, form a comÂmuÂnity, sit down, shut up, medÂiÂtate, and then learn to be more self-sufficient. Eat locally, cut costs, stop driÂving everyÂwhere, save a few bucks, study someÂthing that enlivens your soul. Become strong in your self.
More on this next issue.
