PrepaÂraÂtion and the IlluÂsion of Control

“It’s a tough job, but someÂone has to do it!â€
The idea for today’s artiÂcle arose at breakÂfast. Our friends Debashis and AdriÂenne were over, and DarÂbella and Debashis were disÂcussing getÂting ready to go back to school. I menÂtioned in passÂing that I was a few days late writÂing this artiÂcle and asked for topÂics. Debashis came up with “GetÂting Ready,†and menÂtioned how easy it was to get quite “lost in preparation.â€
This comes up a lot, for clients. It seems to me to be a bit ‘twisty-turny’ so let me toss out some usages.
The Doom and Gloom Scenario
One of the stanÂdard arguÂments against being present is, “But if I only focus on today, I might not have enough money when I retire,†or some variÂant thereof. It’s as if the perÂson is sayÂing that they must focus, endÂlessly, on some future point in time, and on all of the details to get there, or things will fall apart.
It doesn’t seem to regÂisÂter that such planÂning, in the past, has typÂiÂcally not worked out as they thought, here in the present. Most have much, in the present, to comÂplain about–their relaÂtionÂship isn’t workÂing out, work isn’t workÂing, mom and dad are still behavÂing like mom and dad, and on and on. If we could peer into the past, we’d see that, say a year ago, they were planÂning and thinkÂing and decidÂing, and none of it led to where they thought they were heading.
A client and I were havÂing cofÂfee. At a prior sesÂsion, we’d talked money and budÂgets. She said, “After our last sesÂsion, I realÂized that I’d creÂated budÂgets, and thought that was it. I now realÂize that we’d break the budÂget regÂuÂlarly, by jusÂtiÂfyÂing purÂchases in the moment.†In other words, the budÂget was done as a thing in itself. “Look, we have a budÂget!†but the day-to-day appliÂcaÂtion of the planÂning was chaotic.
The “You Go First†Model
Many clients have said, “Yes, I want a deep and meanÂingÂful relaÂtionÂship, and I want to use the comÂmuÂniÂcaÂtion model, but I’m not going to put the effort in until I know it’s going to work out, and that my partÂner is going to do it too.â€
MasÂter of Manipulation
Other clients have a plan for their lives that seems to work for them, and they try, subÂtly or not so, to impose it upon othÂers. They do the same thing, which has never worked, over and over, and figÂure perÂsisÂtence will evenÂtuÂally lead to someÂthing new. As opposed to tryÂing someÂthing new, and seeÂing what happens.
Mostly, I think, peoÂple are caught in behavÂiour loops. They plan and hope and wish, and then assume someÂthing has shifted. But here’s the joke: when you shift your underÂstandÂing of a sitÂuÂaÂtion, nothÂing outÂside of you has shifted! There is no magic, as Zen insists on pointÂing out. You, always and endÂlessly, have to take the menÂtal plan and turn it into conÂcrete action.
So, all of the plotÂting and planÂning and rethinkÂing, while noble and worthÂwhile so long as it is not obsesÂsive, accomÂplishes nothÂing in the real world. To use my first illusÂtraÂtion, worÂryÂing about havÂing enough money at retireÂment, even budÂgetÂing to have enough, is all well and good. Putting cash into a retireÂment account, and leavÂing it there, is the only way to actuÂally have money at retirement.
SimÂiÂlarly, there is no way to plan for the next school year, beyond listÂing when you are teachÂing what, where. You can buy mateÂriÂals, set up your room(s), disÂcuss stuÂdents with your teachÂing partÂner. You are, howÂever, deludÂing yourÂself if you think that this has accomÂplished anyÂthing in terms of day-to-day teaching.
Why?
Because, day by day, stuÂdents are going to show up, and each will be who s/he is that day. You canÂnot plan to cover all conÂtinÂgenÂcies. And even if you could, the odds that you’d be able to recall what you planned as some obscure thing hapÂpens, are close to nil.
WisÂdom is “no plan.†It’s innoÂvaÂtion when disÂasÂter strikes
Back when I was trainÂing to be a therÂaÂpist, I had to subÂmit notes on my sesÂsions. The notes conÂsisted of the setÂting, details of the person’s week, and what hapÂpened durÂing the sesÂsion. Lastly, I had to write a treatÂment plan for the next sesÂsion. I did it because that was the only way I could pass, but even then noticed that my plans selÂdom if ever got enacted, because the client refused to coöperÂate by havÂing nothÂing hapÂpen durÂing the interÂvenÂing week. I had to deal with what was actuÂally going on. ImagÂine how stuÂpid this would sound: “I’m really sorry that your husÂband was hit by a truck, but I’d planned to disÂcuss your relaÂtionÂship to your mother.â€
Yet, many conÂduct their relaÂtionÂships exactly this way. They see things a cerÂtain way, walk into a sitÂuÂaÂtion with their partÂner, stuÂdent, mother-in-law (Hi Cheryl!) and expect that the other perÂson is going to coöperÂate in what they think should be going on. The next thing you know, you’re angry—furious—that the sitÂuÂaÂtion or other perÂson is doing their thing, and aren’t changÂing to fit your plan.
LivÂing the Zen Moment
My goal is to perÂsuade you to minÂiÂmize the prepaÂraÂtion for livÂing, while maxÂiÂmizÂing actuÂally doing it. And the only place you can “do it†is in the here and now, in this sitÂuÂaÂtion, as this sitÂuÂaÂtion occurs. It doesn’t matÂter what your plan says, because realÂity is what it is, and is not subÂject to you or your plans.
So, go ahead and plan and preÂpare, but do so with a light heart and a genÂtle hold. As things change (and of course they will…) go with the flow of it all, letÂting the prep and plan fall to the side, as you simÂply engage with the moment, with the peoÂple you are actuÂally with, in ways that are eleÂgant and centered.
