Table of conÂtents for ExplorÂing your Options
“It’s not the destination—it’s the path â€
The point of the exercise
So, here we are at the end of this mini series, and I want to give you some guidelines.
As I’ve writÂten, this exerÂcise was designed to help you see an overÂall direcÂtion for your life. Most of us quite clearly know what we are called to do, or what “pulls us.†And many fear what such a pull might require.
I hope you folÂlowed along with the exerÂcises, and espeÂcially looked at the ways you get in your own way. That one exerÂcise is a priceÂless gift — proÂvidÂing you’re willÂing to take the next step.
Blocks—Your “ComÂplexÂiÂfyÂing Listâ€
Have another look at your list of ways you stop yourÂself. There may be many items on your list, but I can assure you that every item is a variÂant of one or two baseÂline reaÂsons for not folÂlowÂing one’s path.
Fear and Self-justification
Fear—we don’t like uncerÂtainly, and folÂlowÂing the pull of your heart, when reaÂson is screamÂing, “You’ve got to be kidÂding me!†is tricky. You know you are caught in fear-based thinkÂing when you find yourÂself only talkÂing about what could go wrong.
Self-justification—here’s another exerÂcise. Look at where you are, right now. Include an invenÂtory of
Now, and this will be hard, look at your list, and notice what you tell yourÂself about these things.
Here’s what I hear, a lot:
“I’d be happy if I was marÂried to another person.â€
“My kids drive me crazy.â€
“I’d leave my job, but I’ve got seniorÂity and penÂsion to consider.â€
“My parÂents give me bad advice.â€
And tons of other excuses that do only one thing: jusÂtify the person’s stayÂing stuck, through thick appliÂcaÂtion of finger-pointing and lack of self-responsibility.
Here’s the imporÂtant part
You are where you are right now, doing what you are doing, solely and comÂpletely by your free choice. No one dragged you there, no one makes you keep repeatÂing the same stuÂpid misÂtakes, and no one ‘makes you miserable.’
I have one client who endÂlessly lists probÂlems, then assigns blame, and then, after a sesÂsion, lets me know I have helped her. But it’s a weird thing.
She thinks that what I am telling her is to suck it up, stop creÂatÂing drama, and then life will be hapÂpier. I’m not. I want her to stop the games, stop wastÂing her life, and get on with her walk—which, so far, she’s been too busy to do.
What’s she busy with? StayÂing stuck, through anger, blamÂing and self justification!
Here’s the point of all of this
I’m not tryÂing to find ways for my client, or for you, to be hapÂpier with your lot in life. I’m workÂing toward getÂting you to drop your excuses and evaÂsions, and go, do, and be the perÂson you are meant to be.
Instead of fear or excuse based livÂing, I’m encourÂagÂing you to step up to the plate, drop the things that you are holdÂing yourÂself back over (includÂing jobs, relaÂtionÂships, ‘social obligÂaÂtions,’ etc.) and finally get on with livÂing a rich and meanÂingÂful life.
ConÂsider the state of the world.
I don’t know about you, by my investÂment portÂfoÂlio is down 30% or more in the last month. We are in a recesÂsion, jobs and entire comÂpaÂnies are disÂapÂpearÂing, the sub-prime mortÂgage débâÂcle in the USA is nowhere near to the botÂtom, and this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Most naively assumed that the boom times would never end, and so fixÂated on exterÂnals. Now, the exterÂnals are crumÂbling, and exterÂnal secuÂrity is being seen for the illuÂsion it always has been. And despite bilÂlions upon bilÂlions of resÂcue cash, the drama goes on.
My point? You can’t wait for the right time. You can’t wait for perÂmisÂsion. You can’t stop yourÂselves out of fear. No matÂter what you want, “the world†is going to do whatÂever it does. ExterÂnals won’t save you.
It’s time to impleÂment ‘your perÂfect day.’ How? Small step by small step, but always walking.
Time to own your path, and to start walkÂing it. Divest yourÂself of the things that are millÂstones around your neck, and start walking.
The card at the top (the illusÂtraÂtion) is from the OSHO Zen Tarot deck. Notice, it is called “OrdiÂnarÂiÂness.†The perÂson is walkÂing the path, colÂlectÂing the harÂvest. He is doing what he is doing, with full attenÂtion. He is not tryÂing to be speÂcial, to be noticed, to be “in charge.†He’s just mindÂfully walkÂing the only path availÂable to him—his own path.
Part of the card descripÂtion reads:
You are facÂing a time now when this easy, natÂural and utterly ordiÂnary approach to the sitÂuÂaÂtions you encounter will bring far betÂter results than any attempts on your part to be brilÂliant, clever, or othÂerÂwise extra-ordinary…The speÂcial gift you have to offer now is preÂsented best by just takÂing things easÂily and simÂply, one step at a time.
You have your life, and you have your skill set.
If there is a point to all of this—to life and living–it is this:
Stop playÂing games and blockÂing your best self, either through fear or through endÂless self-justifications for stayÂing stuck. Engage with your wants, your pasÂsion and your true direcÂtion. Take one step, and one step, but do not divert from this path. Drop that which weighs you down, and walk.
Or, to quote Anais Nin:
There is not one big cosÂmic meanÂing for all, there is only the meanÂing we each give to our life, an indiÂvidÂual meanÂing, an indiÂvidÂual plot, like an indiÂvidÂual novel, a book for each person.
and
There came a time when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
Be the blossom.

That was a great blog post.

Glad you liked it. I’m pleased that I rememÂbered that old workÂshop, and the “PerÂfect Day†exerÂcise. Nice to get to use that again.
