So, you all received the e-mail detailÂing how subÂscribers to the BLOG can now downÂload 3 of my e-books, absolutely free. I’m not sure if this is a “forÂever†thing, but let’s assume so, for now. If you look at the top of the e-mail verÂsion of this BLOG, subÂscribers have a link to the free e-books.
If you know anyÂone who would benÂeÂfit from my e-books, and benÂeÂfit from this BLOG, send them to: http://www.phoenixcentre.com/cgi-bin/prolinkz/pl.cgi?free
So, last week I menÂtioned the idea of gates — blocks to proÂgresÂsion through the maze that is life. One of the things I said was that the first 3 Chakras are physÂiÂcal, and that most peoÂple get stuck there. I want to talk more about this, as well as explore what it means to “express yourself.â€

The Three LevÂels of Self
The Haven’s “take†on this matches my own. In a nutÂshell, we come into the world as AuthenÂtic Selves — this “self†is pure potenÂtial. The authenÂtic self is the conÂtainer for everyÂthing about us. It conÂtains our full skill set, and all of the resources we are born with.
The authenÂtic self colÂlides with social proÂgramÂming, and in a sense becomes the reposÂiÂtory for the aspects of our self that are deemed impracÂtiÂcal, scary, or “wrong.†Thus, as adults our authenÂtic self is basiÂcally a reposÂiÂtory for everyÂthing that has not been “eleÂvated†to make up our Actual Self.
Our authenÂtic self thus conÂtains the things about ourÂselves we have been taught to repress.
In other words, when we are born, we are 100% authenÂtic self. By adultÂhood, the mix is likely 10% actual self, and 90% repressed mateÂrÂial, still conÂtained in our authenÂtic self. Through conÂdiÂtionÂing, this mateÂrÂial has often receded into our subÂconÂscious or unconscious.
EnculÂturÂizaÂtion
Taken from an old issue of PlayÂboy. I wish I knew who drew it…
I tackle this issue in depth in my book, This EndÂless Moment, in the secÂtion on “DeconÂstrucÂtion.†Briefly, our authenÂtic self colÂlides with our famÂiÂlies, tribes (I use this word to denote groups, i.e. small town vs. city, conÂserÂvÂaÂtive vs. libÂeral, reliÂgions vs. not, etc.) and culÂtures. This colÂliÂsion is meant to be benign — this is our “enculÂturÂizaÂtion,†where those in charge of us and our “proper upbringÂing†bring to bear the colÂlecÂtive wisÂdom of our culture.
If enculÂturÂizaÂtion did not hapÂpen,
we would be unable to function.
HowÂever, the method of this process, reduced to its essenÂtials, is the creÂation of dualÂity. We learn me / not me, good / bad, right /wrong, among othÂers. Now rememÂber, this is not based upon some uniÂverÂsally agreed upon norm, but is very speÂcific to the tribes and culÂtures we grew up in.
In this process, we start to repress what is frowned upon, and emphaÂsize what is held in high esteem.
This process conÂtinÂues throughÂout our school years, as more and more peoÂple impose their perÂspecÂtive (and will) upon us. As simÂple and comÂmon examÂple: most six-year-olds are a bunÂdle of energy, and in first grade are taught to sit still and shut up. We learn to do so by force of will, aka tightÂenÂing musÂcles to keep from wigÂgling. HoldÂing stuff in is the methodÂolÂogy of enculturization.
By the time we reach adultÂhood (in years, not in matuÂrity) we have “stuffed†great porÂtions of our selves.

The stuffed mateÂrÂial may be obviÂous. I see this a lot. SomeÂone will tell me about someÂthing their mother does that they hate, for examÂple, and then a few minÂutes later will give an instance of doing exactly the same thing, but will jusÂtify it. Yelling at kids is a good examÂple. They know they hated it as a kid, and yet engage in the hateÂful behavÂiour themÂselves, sort of on autopilot.
One of my favourite clients tells me that her mother gives terÂriÂble advice, espeÂcially about relaÂtionÂships. Yet, where does she go for relaÂtionÂship advice? Yup. Mom. (For the record, mom is still wrong, but my client believes the “enculÂtured†rule that “Moms give good advice.â€
Other mateÂrÂial is buried in the sub and unconÂscious. Carl Jung was big on “Shadow work,†which is a process of explorÂing the subÂconÂscious mateÂrÂial. HidÂden there are the “scary parts†of our selves. At least, they were scary to our tribes. It would do us well to explore this mateÂrÂial, as much juice and fun is conÂtained therein.
AnyÂway, by adultÂhood all that we are
(have become) is our Actual Self.
This is the socially acceptÂable remÂnants of all that we could have been. It’s actuÂally quite funcÂtional within the paraÂmeÂters of the culÂture we grew up in.
If you want to see this at work, watch “The AmazÂing Race.†The peoÂple with the most highly develÂoped (largest) actual selves are the ones who funcÂtion well in forÂeign culÂtures, espeÂcially the culÂtures that are really difÂferÂent. They have learned some flexÂiÂbilÂity, as opposed to judgements.
The majorÂity of peoÂple are like the conÂtesÂtants with poorly develÂoped actual selves. They are the ones who get all worked up when peoÂple don’t speak EngÂlish, aren’t interÂested in going faster, or are livÂing in what the “racer†conÂsidÂers poverty.
HovÂerÂing above the actual self, is the Ideal Self.
The conÂtents of the Ideal Self is tribal. What is ideal in North AmerÂica is not necÂesÂsarÂily ideal elseÂwhere. Now, by ideal, I do not (and The Haven does not) mean corÂrect or right. Ideal means “what the sociÂety subÂscribes to as being highly useÂful or desirÂable.†This ideal self model creÂates a pull toward tryÂing to take one’s actual self (which, by defÂiÂnÂiÂtion is incomÂplete) and force it even more firmly into society’s ideal mold.
Once you see that this patÂtern of develÂopÂment is not only true, but true for you, you also see why you are stuck.
Chakras 1, 2, and 3 are all about the areas most often covÂered by the ideal self. These areas involve secuÂrity, propÂerty, ownÂing, posÂsessÂing, how one uses relaÂtionÂships, and how one relates to self.
Initially, the self described here is the actual self tryÂing (but always failÂing) to be ideal. The ideal self is a myth — a creÂation — someÂthing our sociÂety marÂkets as “being the best you can be.†It always involves conÂformÂing to the herd menÂtalÂity, being more like everyÂone else, and strivÂing ceaseÂlessly to fit in (albeit at a higher level.)
The goal of the ideal self is to get a leg up on othÂers, preferÂably by using the other perÂson as a stepÂping stone.
And always failing.
Because othÂers are also strugÂgling to get a leg up, there is a lot of jostling about and not a lot of help in the process. And rememÂber, since to goal is “ideal,†or perÂfecÂtion, it is a project doomed to failÂure — as no one, ever, is perfect.
The only way through this block is to let go.
You canÂnot folÂlow the herd rules and expect to shift from this sysÂtem to the next phase in perÂsonal develÂopÂment. ShiftÂing requires, in a sense, writÂing an entirely new script for yourÂself. This script is one of self-exploration. You begin to examÂine groundÂedÂness, relaÂtionÂships and self-esteem from another perÂspecÂtive — what can I learn about myself and my way of being in the world? This exploÂration is not about getÂting ahead. It’s about gainÂing depth.
One way to begin this work is to ask yourÂself this:
What is your marker for success?
Many peoÂple use money or “sucÂcess†(which is meaÂsured in more money) as the marker. Or they may pick satÂisÂfacÂtion, but as you unpack it, it’s linked to more “stuff.†This fits with the WestÂern notion of “Ideal†equalling endÂless growth, endÂless “more,†and we’re seeÂing the results of this sinÂgle minded focus as the econÂomy teeters on the brink.
Many of my clients, as a matÂter of fact, put this aspect so high in their list that it eclipses parÂentÂing, good relatÂing, and perÂsonal satisfaction.
If you allow yourÂself (typÂiÂcally with the help of a therÂaÂpist) you can shift all of this by doing a comÂbiÂnaÂtion of depth work and bodyÂwork. The depth work is a process for extractÂing mateÂrÂial from your authenÂtic self, and the bodyÂwork helps to let go of the tightÂenÂing down you’ve been doing since someÂone first told you to “conÂtrol yourself.â€
The moveÂment through the first gate (at the juncÂture between solar plexus (self esteem) and the heart (comÂpasÂsionÂate livÂing and engageÂment) requires a comÂmitÂment to depth and fluÂidÂity, as well as a goodly dose of accepÂtance (of the stuffed material.)
We will look at this in more depth next week.
