Last artiÂcle, I menÂtioned the idea of “burnÂing, pasÂsionÂate, self–responÂsiÂbilÂity.†It seems to me that that the definÂiÂtive word – or perÂhaps the essenÂtial word, is “self.â€
Self responÂsiÂbilÂity is never about self absorpÂtion. I use the term self-responsibility to describe self awareÂness. This requires diliÂgent focus on what is going on inside of us, as opposed to endÂless focus on externals.
We find ourÂselves, by findÂing ourselves.
As we endÂlessly say, we were brought up to look outÂside of ourÂselves – for how to act, what to think, and to disÂcover what’s going on.
For examÂple, many clients, when I ask them how they are or what is going on for them, immeÂdiÂately begin to tell me what other peoÂple are doing. How other peoÂple are causÂing them disÂtress, or conÂfuÂsion. How other peoÂple are makÂing them feel someÂthing, as if that is possible.
One client recently reported a conÂverÂsaÂtion with a relÂaÂtive she hadn’t seen in years and years. She then specÂuÂlated on why he had made conÂtact, and then asked me what I thought the relative’s motiÂvaÂtion for makÂing contact.
I was curiÂous about all of it.
I barely know what I’m thinkÂing… how could you?
She was there, and parÂticÂiÂpated in the conÂverÂsaÂtion, and yet could only know her thoughts and motiÂvaÂtions about her side of the conÂverÂsaÂtion. And I could only know what I thought about what she told me. I’m unsure about how I could ever know anyÂthing about another’s motiÂvaÂtion, let alone the motiÂvaÂtion of someÂone I’d never met.
But here’s the point. If she wanted to know what his motiÂvaÂtion was, all she had to do was ask him!
This is what I mean by self awareÂness. A self aware perÂson does not specÂuÂlate about exterÂnals, but rather examÂines how “I†am in relaÂtion to externals.
Self awareÂness is all about idenÂtiÂfyÂing who I am, and how I am, as I live my life fully, deeply, and with passion.
PasÂsion is about enactÂing or engagÂing with what is imporÂtant for me.
From my colÂlege sketchbook…
Because the word is typÂiÂcally linked to senÂsuÂalÂity and sexÂuÂalÂity, we mis-think about our pasÂsions. Many think pasÂsion is self indulÂgent, or self absorbed. OthÂers think that pasÂsions are sort of like hobÂbies, to be engaged in as time perÂmits, and always after the real stuff hapÂpens. OthÂers disÂtract themÂselves from their pasÂsion by creÂatÂing drama, or by colÂlectÂing stuff to mess around with.
I said to a friend the other day that she seemed to be buried under boxes of “colÂlected crap.†Old, unreÂsolved issues and relaÂtionÂships, stuff packed away and dragged out inconÂveÂniently, strange things that have no pracÂtiÂcal use. This stuff, hidÂden in the metaphoric baseÂment of her mind, (as well as tucked away in her actual baseÂment) was the disÂtracÂtion, the focus, the thing that drew her away from self awareness.
Of course, the joke is that she is disÂtractÂing herÂself from self awareÂness be being self absorbed.
She is focussed on past issues, and in that, misses the preÂcarÂiÂous, yet pasÂsionÂate pull of the present.
My goal, perÂsonÂally and proÂfesÂsionÂally, is to endÂlessly proÂmote the present as a really great place to live. My focus on presÂence lets me be fully engaged in seeÂing myself operÂatÂing with moment-by-moment awareness.
Self awareÂness is payÂing attention

Let me use medÂiÂtaÂtion as a descripÂtion of what I’m talkÂing about. Many peoÂple expect that medÂiÂtaÂtion will lead to someÂthing else – peace of mind, calmÂness, tranÂquilÂity, or “no probÂlems.†Yeah, right. MedÂiÂtaÂtion leads to medÂiÂtaÂtion. In other words, medÂiÂtaÂtion is an activÂity, in and of itself.
Now, within that activÂity, much is going on.
Your legs or back might be hurtÂing, you will be thinkÂing thoughts, and you may smell incense, hear outÂside noises, find the light too bright or dim. In other words, as you sit, you experience.
What you are expeÂriÂencÂing, if you let yourÂself, is the moment-by-moment awareÂness of being you. In other words, you are expeÂriÂencÂing yourÂself, being yourself.
Now, if you do have ideas about how the expeÂriÂence ought to be, then you are no longer in the expeÂriÂence. You have drifted off into your head, and are comÂparÂing the actual expeÂriÂence with your imagÂined one, and findÂing realÂity lacking!
I would sugÂgest that this is preÂcisely what we are doing, almost all of the time.
Just like my client in the story above.
She is havÂing a real expeÂriÂence with her relÂaÂtive, and is in her head, wonÂderÂing what is going on. Then, she creÂates a story about why he is there, talkÂing to her, and thinks that her story is either real or true. The story, howÂever, has nothÂing to do with the actual expeÂriÂence. The actual expeÂriÂence was: she was feelÂing her feelÂings and thinkÂing her thoughts, and also speakÂing words to her relÂaÂtive. For her, that was the entire expeÂriÂence. Until she decided to exit the expeÂriÂence and start thinkÂing about it.
Now, I’m not sugÂgestÂing that we stop thinkÂing. That’s imposÂsiÂble. What I am sugÂgestÂing is that, just like in medÂiÂtaÂtion, we notice what’s actuÂally hapÂpenÂing. In this case, thinkÂing. But here’s the key. NoticÂing that I am thinkÂing, and then shiftÂing to the next thing I do, is difÂferÂent from thinkÂing about what I am thinkÂing about!
If I start thinkÂing, by defÂiÂnÂiÂtion, I am “out of the expeÂriÂence and into my head.â€
PasÂsion is active and total engageÂment in the present expeÂriÂence. This flies in the face of the culÂtural norm of endÂlessly anaÂlyzÂing everyÂthing, (playÂing with the stuff in the boxes.) The wise soul notiÂcies the pull to fidÂdle around, and then moves on.
No matÂter what you think you are accomÂplishÂing, up there in your head, it pales in comÂparÂiÂson to actuÂally doing or proÂducÂing something.
PasÂsion is engageÂment with the now. Even such a simÂple act as “sitÂting†is ripe with meanÂing and depth. As you watch, moment by moment, you see yourÂself, and you see what is up for you. This process is an openÂing, and what opens is your eyes, your voice, and your heart. You become real.
I menÂtioned medÂiÂtaÂtion (zazen) for a reaÂson. I think that this pracÂtice, daily, is what begins to open the door to pasÂsionÂate engageÂment with life. I’ve heard a milÂlion reaÂsons why estabÂlishÂing a daily pracÂtice is imposÂsiÂble (I’ve used some of those reaÂsons myself) and what I’ve disÂcovÂered is that when I do not sit, I do not have very much focus. It’s thereÂfore not one of the things that I make optional.
I encourÂage you to start meditating.
(Please note! I’ve included a video on medÂiÂtatÂing which may or may not show up in the e-mail verÂsion of this BLOG. If it’s not directly below, go to the actual BLOG post to view!) Also, if the video isn’t showÂing on the BLOG page, do a page refresh, or <a target=“_blank†href=“http://www.youtube.com/v/bbOFRmg3ivA&hl=en&fs=1″ onclick=“javascript:_gaq.push([’_trackEvent’,‘outbound-article’,‘http://www.youtube.com’]);â€â€>go here
I also encourÂage you to start payÂing attenÂtion to the stoÂries you tell yourÂself. PresÂence and pasÂsion require that you notice the stoÂries, feelÂings, evaÂsions, and games that you are playÂing, all withÂout proÂjectÂing any of it on to other peoÂple or circumstances.
Once you notice that you are not noticÂing, you can, well, begin to notice.
Each and every time you turn your attenÂtion to othÂers, and to stoÂries and fanÂtasies, simÂply name the process, “ExterÂnalÂizÂing!†and come back to you and your present expeÂriÂence. This is harder than you think. HowÂever, it is the key process for findÂing and engagÂing your pasÂsion.
Do it, now!
